Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline

Excellent reference book to assist veterinarians to quickly access & diagnose their patients. Equally helpful for the pet owner as it will provide information on common diseases, whether or not it is breed specific, signs the pet will present with, causes and risk factors, diagnosis, recommended lab tests, treatment protocols and medications and dosing schedules. It also lists recommended follow-up tests. I have periodically purchased updated copies which have proved equally helpful to me as I have had ten Shar-pei over the last 30+ years and they often present with symptoms that are difficult to diagnose. On one particular occasion after receiving & referencing this book on a suspected ailment, prior to receiving a call back from our veterinarian, we were in agreement except for one key point. While I can't recall exactly what this was as that pet has not been with us for over 12 years now, I disagreed with our Vet and I suggested we follow an alternate protocol. Our Vet was quite skeptical and very adamant about not doing so as he suspected Dr. Google was the source for what I was suggesting. When I corrected him and informed him I found that information in Blackwell's, he immediately looked at this copy again, and informed me his book did not indicate that. When I inquired what edition he had it turned out mine was the more recent and therefore contained the most up to date medical information. I suggested he might need a new updated copy. <VBG> We then agreed to follow the protocol I suggested that was recommended by Blackwell's.

Great book for quick review of information. I've had an older version for years and this is a nice updated version, though the paper quality is a bit thin. I've been practicing for over 25 years and this is still one of my favorite quick reference books (quicker than logging onto VIN!)

I am just starting my veterinary career and this book has so much information set up in a very succinct manner which is so helpful! This book was recommended to me by another veterinarian and I’m so glad I listened and bought this book!

I have often watch so called highly experienced Vets leave the room and sneak to a corner to check the contents. It discusses primary diagnosis, appropriate and alternate diagnoses and the testing and treatment options. I had a dog with a tricky hormone problem and I looked out the door as the Vet left the room and read this book for about five minutes. I pulled my copy out of my briefcase and read it in four. She returned pontificating on the probable disease and treatment; I countered with a more detailed explanation and then removed the book from my briefcase and offered it to her as it was a more recent edition. Even if you trust the Vet you may want to order better tests and this is a bible for doing so.

The formulary has been removed in this edition. Much less useful.
