When I first saw the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet, I was suspicious-freeze-dried sausage and eggs didn’t sound particularly appetizing. However, after a chilly pre-dawn camping trip when I could see my breath, I decided to give it a try, and the smell of cooking peppers and hash browns wafting from that tiny pouch actually surprised me. This meal comes with eggs, sausage, peppers, and shredded potatoes, all freeze-dried for easy preparation and convenience. To make it, all I did was boil some water in my portable stove and pour it in the pouch. After waiting about 10 minutes, it was all ready to eat. Although it costs a bit more than a granola bar, the under-$10 price feels fair for the quality and simplicity it provides, especially when you’re miles away from a kitchen. I expected something rubbery or bland, but the potatoes had texture, the sausage had a smoky flavor, and it was surprisingly filling. It’s also gluten-free, which doesn’t necessarily affect me, but it is good for those whose diets adhere to it. I loved how light, easy, and genuinely tasty it was, though it is slightly salty and requires boiling water since there’s no cold prep option. Overall, I’d give the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet a solid 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely purchase it again. It’s perfect for campers, hikers, or even an emergency food supply-if you want a hot, homemade-style breakfast in the wilderness, this one delivers.

When I was in college, I, “accidentally” found my way into an old Cold War bomb shelter. There were lots of freeze dried meals, so I liberated a few, being a poor college student. After eating a couple of them, I decided that it would actually be better to die in a nuclear holocaust than to have to survive on those things. fast forward to 2025. I’ve tried a whole bunch of camping meals by many different manufacturers and they all have left me wanting for a variety of reasons. Either the food was bland or it was just disgusting or the packaging was bad. I heard that this brand was supposed to be really good. A friend of mine who is a nurse sent me a text message one night saying that she was hungry but the cafeteria was closed and nobody would deliver food that late. I sent her four of these meals, all different, and suggested that she keep one in her bag and one in her car for just such an occasion. She told me that they were delicious. I bought a bunch of them for myself and I have to agree. These meals are wayyyyy better than anything I’ve ever tried. They have great flavor, great texture and are substantial in size. The packaging is awesome. It is thick, heavy material with a zip lock that really holds in the moisture. This is important for two reasons. I add the hot water, seal the bag and let it sit for five minutes and then I turn it over upside down for another five minutes so that the remaining water drains down to the top of the bag and hydrates everything up there. I have yet to have a single drop leak out. Really a great value for the money at 10 bucks. I keep them around for those situations where I’m working at 2 o’clock in the morning and I am really hungry, but don’t want to take the time to make food. I can get a great meal in 10 minutes.

Tastes pretty good for being a dehydrated meal. Kind of like gourmet jail food. It’s great for camping. I bought the 2 serving one, but I split the amount in half and used the 2nd half the next day. It says to cook in the package, but I just used a pot with lid. It is pretty expensive for one or two meals. But when you need protein and are tired of protein bars, it does the job.

If you camp, travel, or just want a standby, this is the best! Long life span! Easy to prepare. Just follow the instructions! Excellent taste and caloric value.

We love mountain house freeze dried foods which we have a good amount in the big cans in case of needing emergency food. We like this breakfast skillet so we order it occasionally and eat it together as it’s so easy and tastes great

The meal consisted of a good amount of eggs, with some peppers, sausage bits, and shreds of potato. Since it is a freeze-dried meal once everything reconstituted it became kind of mushy. It did not affect taste but people who are sensitive to texture should keep that in mind. Aside from that the meal reconstituted fine and I did not have any crunchy bits in my meal. However, the taste of the meal itself was lackluster. It was not bad, but was not good either. It tasted quite flat and plain. It would probably be much better with some black pepper, salt and hot sauce. I would suggest adding some sort of bread to eat with this meal (tortillas, toast, etc.). Overall it wasn't spectacular but it was edible. Would highly recommend the before mentioned modifications I listed if you decide to purchase this meal. One last thing, as with most Mountain House meals add slightly less water than it calls for and let it sit for 5ish extra minutes as well for better taste.

Didn't expect a lot when I tried this, but man was I wrong. Super quick and easy to make, smelled amazing when done, and the taste was spot on. This seriously blew me away, will definitely order again.
