Since the time our twins were babies, they slept in the same room. We used a music player and bought some "white noise" music so our kids could listen to some soothing sounds to help them sleep. After our twins got their own rooms, we didn't have another music player so one of our kids didn't have any soothing sounds for a little while. A couple months ago, my son said his room was too quiet so I just happened to find this sound machine really quickly. It was a great price and it seemed to be just what we were looking for so we ordered it. This sound machine is a great option if you simply want a sound machine for someone's bedroom or you want one to use for travel. You can even use it for both options! The actual machine is small and compact so it doesn't take up a lot of space. It measures 4 3/8 inches long, 4 inches deep, and 2 1/2 inches high. It's white and the front of the machine is the speaker so it projects a good amount of sound. There are six sound settings: rain, brook, thunder, white noise (aka static), ocean, and summer night. There are also buttons for power, timers (15, 30, and 60 minutes), and volume up and down. There are two options for the power source. You can either use the included AC adaptor or three AA batteries, the latter of which are not included. This machine is made in China. My son was so excited when this arrived! We just opened the box, took it straight to his room, plugged it in, and started testing it out. He's almost five so it's really easy for him to use because he can press the buttons himself and he knows how to use the volume and power buttons. We've tried out all of the sounds and he prefers "brook" best because it's just bubbling water sounds. The thunder one can be a bit loud and he's scared of storms so we don't use that one currently. Also, when that one is turned up louder, the thunder sounds tinny coming out of the speaker. The rest of the sounds are nice, relaxing, and sound natural. The other thing I really like about it is that my son sleeps better because of it! He wakes up occasionally during the night but he doesn't wake up scared because he heard a strange sound. At first I was thinking that we had to choose how long the sounds would play but we don't! The sounds will stay on all night until you turn it off in the morning unless you choose a timer. Overall, we are very happy with this purchase and the price was just what we had hoped to pay! Our son has slept better since we got it and it's easy for him to use himself. I love that it stays on all night and the sounds are soothing for him. It's also a great size for traveling so we can just pack it up in a suitcase to take it with us. We haven't tried out other sound machines but so far, we are very happy with this one and recommend it if you want a good, yet inexpensive sound machine!

We live with two cats and a dog in the house, a dog who stays on the enclosed back porch with a pet door, and two larger dogs who go to bed in a metal building with access to an outdoor pen. All of these friendly fur people create various noises throughout the night. The constant movement of the indoor animals, the pet door flapping and the barking alerts of the outside dogs when the country rabbits, possums and raccoons go marauding about, all attribute to an often interrupted night's sleep. Oh yes, and the husband snoring doesn't help much either. Therefore, I decided to partially mask some of the sounds, not all, but some. I still want to be able to hear if someone is breaking in or an animal is in distress. In reading the reviews of the sound machines available, I decided to purchase the Big Red Rooster. Rain is my dream maker and the rain sound on this machine is wonderful. The loop of playtime is not noticeable and a thunderstorm (without actually having to worry about lightening striking the house!) is soothing. It can be set for 15, 30 or 60 minutes of playtime but can also be left on all night if no time limit is set. The volume control goes from very very soft to louder than anything I would want to go to sleep by. It comes with an AC adapter which I leave plugged in but batteries can also be used. The box is very small and unobtrusive on my bedside table. I'm quite happy with the sounds and ease of operation. Update 4/18/17: I cannot begin to say how much I've enjoyed my little sleep enhancer. I've had it for almost a year now and use it every night and daytime naps. I think my cats are becoming addicted to it, too.

Small, powerful, & the buttons are such an improvement from the last model! My only issue is some of the sounds have a pause like it’s looping & it can be annoying. Otherwise love it. It has good timer options, the sound options are good & it’s very nice & sturdy.

Nice and affordable, so much so, I ordered a second one.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: We first got a Big Red Rooster sound machine years ago. It was fantastic quality and used every single night in my son's room. He especially loved the "summer night" sound. When it finally started to die, I came back and ordered another without looking at updated reviews. It had been so fantastic, I presumed that would continue. W.r.o.n.g!!! Our dearly beloved original limped along for a few months, right on past the return date. We opened the new one last night. It is horrid. It may be styled in copy cat version of the original, but similarities end there. Cheap quality in your hand. Buttons feel wobbly. Sound machine is flimsy. The plug sticks out so much we can no longer use the outlet behind the dresser where the other one sat. The cable barely fits into the adapter. I had to try 6 or 7 times just to get it turn on. We finally have sound. Then my 9 year old pressed his favorite "summer night" and it sounded so much like an alarm going off that his eyes grew large. Whoever developed the Big Red Rooster must be heartbroken over what has become of what was a beloved part of nighttime in home after home. Learn from my mistake. DO NOT BUY. THE BEST SOUND MACHINE IS NO LONGER, R.I.P.

We searched for a white noise machine that did not include any kind of nightlight. This fit the bill. It's simple, but it does exactly what we need it to do. I would recommend it.

This is a decent sound machine. I guess if I were using it for myself I would say it's great for the price. I'm using it my a 6mo old baby. We discovered recently that using the vacuum cleaner to lull him to sleep worked like a charm. However, it's extremely loud and I have to turn it off completely after he falls asleep. I ordered this sound machine after reading another review from someone who was doing the same thing with the vacuum for their baby. They said this sound machine was perfect for them. I am a little disappointed in this sound machine. The quality of sound is decent, the sound options are also decent, it does get pretty loud, and my son likes the white noise setting. It worked great to lull him to sleep after I turned it all the way up. The major problem I have is with buttons. They are louder than sound machine itself when you press them. After he falls asleep I would like to be able to turn the volume down a bit and keep it on for the rest of the night. Each time I press the button to lower the volume (maybe 3-4 times) he stirs from the noise. They make this very loud clicking noise every time you press them. I will most likely be sending this back and looking for a new one. I can't see why the buttons can't be quieter, hopefully the manufacturer addresses this issue. The machine speaker also "rattles" the box a tad when it is turned up. Not a huge deal, but when combined with the button issue makes me think they should take another look at their manufacturing.
