Beautiful Artbook
I'm a big Iron Man fan, and I thoroughly enjoyed the third movie in the franchise. This artbook covers all the concept art and designs I could hope for, with a particular emphasis on Tony's new suits. Some highlights:- A foldout poster of all 42 Iron Man suits (the Iron Legion) with the nicknames Tony gave them, such as "Nightclub", "Romeo", and "Hot Rod". Designs range from classic red and gold to streamlined black stealth suit to a beautiful silver-white deep-space suit, which was inspired by NASA shuttles. There is an entire chapter devoted just to concept art of the suits and description of their special functions.- Concept art of the Mandarin, including a detailed rendition of his cape (which is surprisingly intricate!) and two full pages devoted just to his rings. You can see the jewels and etchings on each of them.- Sketches of Tony's homemade weapons! There's a super 77 flame thrower, a saw blade thrower, and many others. Apparently, the propmaster actually based some of the designs on real, functional weapons people have made.- Storyboards of the helicopter gunship attack on Tony's mansion and the sequence where Iron Man saves all the people who get blasted out of the airplane.- Finally, my favorite part is at the end: the artists drew a bunch of cartoons depicting creative ways each of Tony's suits kill off Extremis soldiers in the final seaport battle. Some of them are really funny, like when the deep-space suit sticks a jet pack on an Extremis dude and blasts him into space, or the black suit splits into pieces to "divide and conquer" an army of Extremis.Definitely a worthwhile purchase for a fan, or anyone interested in all the Iron Man suits that you saw in the film! I have a huge respect for the artists, costume designers, and prop people who made sure every little detail of the movie came to life. (Seriously, they took a month to do all the illustrations for the Mandarin's rings!)

Another high quality production
There isn't a whole lot that separates this art book from the art books for Iron Man and Iron Man 2. There's a lot of concept art for the set pieces, such as destruction of Stark's home, and new characters like Mandarin and Aldrich Killian. That's why I only gave four stars - after 2 previous excellent books, it's tough to make this one a must-have purchase for anyone but collectors. The focus is his armor, and there's only so many sketches of the same armor with slight design modifications you can see before it becomes boring. That said, what makes this book worthwhile (at least for fans) is the gallery of the Iron Legion. Every suit is represented in order in a beautiful fold out chart. While it's short on details for most of them, it is still great to see them all singled out. There is an illustration of each, along with the mark number and "nickname". Several of the suits do get more information, mainly those "featured" in the film. This is especially true for the Mark 43 prehensile suit he wears through most of the action. It's so different, at least in functionality if not look, that the concepts art and creator input are actually interesting.Overall, this is another high quality art book with great production values, glorious imagery and a nice slipcase. Recommended.

Where is the "art"?!
It would be far too easy to go into some self-appreciating review of the movie and how it ruined my life because "they" got this, that or the other wrong in what I suppose to be the correct interpretation of said idea, but I won't.Instead, I will focus on the book: "The Art of Iron Man 3."With that said, a little background on how and why I got the book.Tony Stark has always been a character that I felt I could relate to.Growing up on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma, I never knew my mom, but I was fortunate to be raised by my dad. He considered himself a bit of an engineering genius. He worked at Jiffy Lube until I was six when he was fired for his inebriated candid conversation about the tricks of the trade ripping off customers to a undercover local news team of investigative reporters from the reservation's two-year college annex media program. After that, being a Native American, he collected his welfare checks from the government which generously surpassed what he was making actually holding a job. He felt his time could be more effectively used to develope his engineering skills when he wasn't drunk or passed out for days at a time. One of the crowning achievements was the iCheese Radio that he hoped to sell one day. Much like a potato, he was able to power a radio from a block of government cheese. He tried other cheeses, but he only had success with the government cheeses that were issued to him every other Thursday. He died shortly after that during a microwave Cheeze Wiz accident that destroyed our trailer.Hoping the apple had fallen close to the tree, I too picked up drinking and inventing at the age of eight. Some of my ideas usually ended up with me staying at the clinic on the reservation for a week and only attending school for a few weeks each year. I built upon the hovercraft design using a vacuum cleaner engine like the specifications from 'Boys Life' magazine. By attaching an extention cord to a series of car batteries on a Radio Flyer wagon, I ended up setting a corn field on fire that burned to death some migrant workers living in the corn field. My hovercraft crashed into the car the sheriff was sleeping in and I ended up spending one night in a juveneile detention center.Prison life hardened me and I became angry. It was there as the social worker drove me home after stopping for ice cream at the mini golf indian family fun center taco buffet casino that I decided to use my engineering skills for my own personal gain.Fast forward a few years and some Iron Man films later, I have long-awaited this art book to provide a plethora of schematics for me to start building my own personal Iron Man suit from. This is where the "art of" book fails me.It's nothing more than a hodgepodge of Iron Man suits, props, enviroments, character designs and long-winded nonsensical jib jab to sell more comic books and action figures. Most of the suits do not even make it into the movie and what you do see in the movie have very little screen time.None of that helps me other than The Mandarin. His costume designs were brilliant. A definite highlight of the movie even though barely covered in the book.

... changed my opinion of the movie slowly (I don't hate it anymore)
Having changed my opinion of the movie slowly (I don't hate it anymore), this is a fine companion piece. Light on information, but heavy on images. It's what I expect in an Art Of book, and I was not disappointed.
