Not since seeing Paul Schoffler years ago have I seen the role of Hans Sachs so well cast. Jose van Dam seems completely natural here, and, unlike the first reviewer, I found the acting between Peter Seiffert and Jose van Dam convincing and seemingly effortless. Michael Volle's Beckmesser is a huge treat. This production was certainly sparing, but to me it made sense. I enjoyed this performance of Die Meistersinger very much. The Levine/Metropolitan one is the perfect traditional staging, much as Wagner envisioned, and musically wonderful. But how can anyone have only one performance of Die Meistersinger on DVD? I would recommend this Zurich production as the second one to have.

Peter Seiffert is an enjoyable Walter, both when singing his arias to perfection, and acting and reacting to the other singers.Michael Volle is an exceptional Beckmesser because he knows how to appear the mincing, fussy, ridicule-deserving, pedantic bitter old man that Wagner intended Sixtus Beckmesser to be. (Isn't it fun to see Wagner, laughing down from the past at his enemies so aptly epitomized by Beckmesser!)The Zurich Ballet provides exceptional dancers that make great contributions to this performance. The "girls from Furth" appear to be the youngest I've ever seen, and the guild song about St. Crispin's Day has never been set off so beautifully as the goat-dressed dancers who really bring it to life.Matti Salminen as Pogner, makes us wish Wagner had written more lines and songs for Eva's father.Finally, Franz Welser-Moest conducts the Zurich Opera flawlessly, though a bit faster than most. The sound can be appreciated with choices of Linear PCM Stereo, Dolby 5.1 surround, and DTS 5.1 surround. Subtitles are in English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.Set Designer Roland Aeschlimann has thoughtfully added many stacks of books to Sachs' cobbler shop to help emphasize his other nature as a poet.Finally, the best feature: Jose Van Dam is wonderful as Hans Sachs--not only his acting the role of a more mature Sachs, but also his sonorous, resonant voice which is reminiscent of the qualities that made Kurt Moll's voice so recognizable and appreciated.

I hate to say this, but this performance is simply unacceptable.The singers seem each to be in his/her own private universe. They do not talk to each other. The conversations--Sachs and Eva (act 2), Sachs and Walther (act 3)--do not feel like conversations but like two selfish soloists dueling for attention.The sets--especially the second and third act sets--are too abstract to give any sense of Nurnberg, showing no buildings or streets. When the crowd of angry townspeople appears at the end of act 2, one wonders where they sprang from.Even the presence of Matti Salminen, my favorite bass alive today, fails to rescue this performance.If you want a beautiful MEISTERSINGER, go for the one from the Australian Opera with Donald "Big Mac" McIntyre brooding and introspective as Sachs and Jonathan Pringle's hilarious Beckmesser. Or, for the best Beckmesser on video, the DeutscheOper's performance with Wolfgang Brendel as Sachs and the genius Eike-Wilm Schulte as Beckmesser.

A former reviewer really didn`t like this DVD. I must disagree with him. Yes, the Levine/Met are wonderful, and I hope to get back to it many times. But, this DVD is a very good alternative. I like Van Dam, and I think he is wonderful here. The other singers are also very good. So the staging isn`t exactly traditional, so what? It`s interesting, and doesn`t interfere with rhe music.Sound and picture - very fine.

レーンホフの演出は奇抜ではありませんが新鮮です。ダム、サルミネン、ザイフェルトと特に男性陣が充実。ヴォッレはザックスよりもこのベックメッサーの方が合っていると私は思います。指揮のメストも手堅い。ただ収録年の割に画質があまり良くないのが残念。元はHD収録のはずなのでリマスターしてBlu-rayで出してほしいです。

Contrairement à l'avis précédent, je trouve que Donald McIntyre est un magnifique Sachs, avec toute la bonté et l'émotivité du personnage. Avant le quintette du 3ème acte, lui-même a les larmes aux yeux... Certes il fatigue un peu au second tableau du troisième acte, mais ce rôle est écrasant à chanter, surtout au troisième acte, car il est tout le temps sur scène, et en 1990, il a déjà 56 ans. Mais la voix reste de toute beauté et la diction excellente.D'ailleurs, j'ai revu cet artiste magnifique dans l'Elektra de Chéreau à Aix-en-Provence, en 2013, dans le rôle tout à fait discret du Vieux Serviteur, et je puis vous dire que du haut de ses 78 ans, les quelques lignes qu'il a chantées sont encore celles d'un très grand - et humble - chanteur.Pour revenir aux Maîtres Chanteurs, certes, la distribution "idéale" est du domaine de l'exceptionnel, d'autant que nous sommes devant du direct, alors qu'au disque, on peut toujours refaire une séquence. Paul Frey peut paraître un peu mièvre, mais la voix est plus belle que celle de Klaus Florian Vogt, et il est au moins plus "regardable" que le monstrueux Walther de Johan Botha, même si la voix de celui-ci est plus belle. Comme quoi certaines distributions passent mieux au disque que sur la scène.Quant à Eva, c'est un rôle bien pâle par rapport aux grandes héroïnes wagnériennes... mais de là à en faire une oie blanche, c'est un peu sévère. Elle obéit à son père, et elle reste attachée à Sachs. Mais elle est - sincèrement - amoureuse de Walther. Comment gérer çà quand on est une jeune fille bien élevée au XIXème siècle ?Moi j'aurais volontiers mis cinq étoiles. Mais la seule faiblesse est la mise en scène un peu conventionnelle de l'Opéra de Sydney, très façon Metropolitan Opéra de NY dans les mêmes années.J'ai quand même eu énormément de plaisir à vois cette version, surtout grâce à Donald McIntyre. Mais toutes les opinions sont recevables...

Vier Stunden Wagner erfordern von allen Beteiligten (Sänger, Dirigent, Orchester, Publikum)großes Stehvermögen resp. Sitzfleisch. Welser-Möst löst seine Aufgabe mit Bravour und reißt das Orchester zu überdurchschnittlicher Leistung mit. Die Dramaturgie steigert sich stetig und gipfelt im farben- und kostümfrohen Spektakel des dritten Aktes. Zu laut und zu schnell - wie in einer anderen Rezension bekrittelt - kam mir weder die Aufführung noch die DVD-Wiedergabe vor; eher wird das bei Wagnerinszenierungen drohende schwülstige und getragene Pathos von vornherein vermieden. Freunde des Regietheaters werden sich dafür nicht begeistern, Liebhaber konventioneller Aufführungen kommen voll auf ihre Kosten. Durchwegs gut besetzt und disponiert sind die Solisten, allen voran Hans Sachs (José van Dam) und Stoltzing (Peter Seiffert). Beckmesser Michael Volle zeigt sich überdies als vorzüglicher Schauspielerin Mimik, Gestik und "Action". Insgesamt eine Aufnahme, die ich bestens empfehlen würde.

Par la qualité de ses interprètes, mais surtout par sa mise en scène, cette production des Maîtres Chanteurs de Nuremberg est à mon sens une référence absolue en la matière. Ici, pas un geste, pas une mimique, pas un instant qui ne soit au service de la musique, comme Richard Wagner l'a toujours souhaité. J'ai eu l'occasion de voir à l'Opéra ou en dvd d'autres productions de la même oeuvre, aucune ne m'a jamais paru aussi juste, aussi subtile, aussi poètique et, osons le mot, parfaite sur le plan scénique, que celle-ci.
