Glacier Mountaineering (How To Climb Series) Review: Top Notch Illustrations - Freedom of the hills is a great end-all-be-all reference book. But chances are you're not going to do any big wall climbing in the same weekend as some glacier mountaineering so it is a little daunting. However if you're already familiar with climbing basics, then this book is the absolute best for glacier travel. The illustrations are detailed, entertaining, and easy to read. The text is not overly wordy and transitions well from subject to subject. I have 3 books that cover this subject, and this is by far my favorite one. Review: Must have. - Great book. Great idea!
In my opinion a good book must be informative and it needs to keep your interest. This book does both. 90 percent of this book is illustrated with cartoon figures with arrows pointing to all the details (actually more detailed that a photo could be). At first glance you might think this book doesn't offer much in the way of knowledge. Nothing could be farther from the truth. This is one of the best books I have read. It is the type of book that you will refer to often and should be read by anyone looking to venture onto glaciers. Nice job guys.

A complete reference for all you need to know, nothing missing but I prefer some things done differently.
I needed a book that would become the standard resource for teaching glacier travel in my club's winter mountaineering schools. The techniques here are brilliantly illustrated and explained! However, the book failed to meet my main expectation due to personal disagreement with some (a very minor but crucial part) of the techniques presented. I cannot teach others what I do not believe myself.

Great fun! Easy to learn from.
The drawings and text make it easy to absorb the information. I recommend this book. I’ll use many of their techniques on my Rainer climb in 2024.

Great source for someone new to glacier travel or even mountaineering in general.
The book appears a little cheesy on the cover but it really is'nt. This book is perfect for someone who is new to mountaineering and wants to learn more about glacier travel. Filled with tons of useful information and the cheesy cartoons do an excellent job of simplifying and explaining technical terrain in a way that makes it very understandable. I have already recommended it to several friends who have purchased it and also liked it.

Great book before exploring the easy glaciers, or to pair up with online courses or glacier courses
Simple, direct, easy and quick to learn and understand. This book is beyond great! I paired this with several online videos, and an intro. course to glacier mountaineering. A lot of what was in the book was covered in the classes. Pretty much the only difference was the experience, preferences, and recommendations from the courses, but this book really did cover a lot! Great for exploring easy glaciers safely in the cascades. Looks like a few others summited Mt. Rainier too based on the reviews. Definitely recommend if you're getting into this, and before buying all your gear!

This book is an absolute need to read for anyone thinking of going s ywhere near a glacier. I keep it tucked into my Freedom text book, they supplement each other well. This one is an easy read, the images are great and the little jokes make me laugh out loud, at what would otherwise be pretty dry content. I've been on a few glacier traverses now and consider this a need to read / refresh each time. I wish I had it before I went out on my first trip (You bet I wore my vertical ice crampons, luckily there was minimal snow but holy smokes the pain!! :X haha )

This book is absolutely fantastic! The drawings are great, the texts are just as much and it was very useful! Don't forget it will never replace what you learn on the glacier with more experienced people, but it's a good theory book!

Come da oggetto. Intelligente, pratico, completo.

This is the best book I have ever read on this subject and I have read a few. Its explains everything that you need to know to travel safely on glaciers. I thought the cartoons would detract from the seriousness of the book, but they don't, they actually help to reinforce the excellent instructional advice in am amusing way. Consequently its a very easy book to read and one you want to dip into frequently. I highly recommend it.

The book has a lot of great info for Mountain enthusiasts. The pictures and cartoons help figure out what the text says and is also fun to read.
