This is a very nice first chess board for kids or adults. We were shocked at the quality of the real wood the board is made of and it appears to be a regulation board as well. Even the staining appears to be done well. The games pieces (pawns, rooks, knights,bishops, Queens and Kings ) are hand carved as well and you simply can't beat the price point for the quality you are getting. We love that the game pieces are magnetic and the board is truly aesthetically appealing as well. Give your kids this fun and very educational game to increase their problem solving skills.

This is an excellent chess set for any level of player. The pieces are of good quality and are magnetic as advertised. The board is also well-designed and with file and rank numbers and letters. For this price point, it definitely deserves a 5-star rating.

Very nice chess set. Bought it for my 11 year old. The pieces are a nice weight. The magnetic board is very nice. Good quality for the price.

the set comes with an extra queen for each side, which is nice for pawn promotions. one of the queens had a bad spot of wood, and it looks like a hole was drilled into it and filled in. that piece doesnt look great, but its an extra piece anyways, and to be honest, its not really noticeable enough to matter when playing. the foam to hold the pieces is a nice touch, makes it feel like a nicer set. the clasps to hold it closed work well. the pieces even have small magnets in them to help keep them in place. again a nice touch for a low cost set. the board is made of wood, but the surface is not actually a bunch of different squares, its a big sticker that is put on top with fake wood grain. however, they do coat the whole thing with a nice varnish so i dont think the sticker will come off. there are far better chess sets in the world, but I dont think you can find a better one for this price. its a pretty good bang for the buck, and even though its not perfect, its very usable, and better than i expected. awesome value, and I do recommend it. i am only counting off one star for the bad piece that had a hole drilled and filled. i would buy it again.

Very good. Pieces, although not perfectly simmetrical and with minor imperfections between white and black, are carved out of wood, look fairly well and give the feel of classical chess pieces. The board is made of wood itself but with some sort of plastic/picture with the squares and notation which is about what you can expect for the price range. Also, it's very portable and has a decent size (smaller than tournament but big enough for casual play).

I bought this to play with my 7 year old grandson. It fits my needs perfectly. Considering the price point it gets the job done and does not break the bank. The pieces fit securely in the box which is good for storage. The magnetic feature works well. I would recommend this set for a good starter set.
