I had just finished reading the series for the second time and loved every minute of it but was sad to see it coming to and end once again. Then... I saw that he had written The Royal Ranger book one! I felt like I won the lottery! Well it didn't disappoint! Please keep them coming Mr. Flanagan! Review: The last book of the series, 12 books in all, a very good read for sure, all of them! One big story. - So I've read the whole series, all 12 books. I don't think they can be reviewed separately really, as they are all part of a really big story. And it is very well told, coherent from book to book, an develops from book one to book 12 in a warm, adventurous way, a really very good read. Good enough I think I will revise this series in a year or so, when the familiarity get a little distant and I can reread the series taking time for the details. Behind the good story (stories really) there are some interesting themes developed, what it means to really grow up, what true friendship and love is, what real courage and heroism is, and, naturally, what is opposite of this in the "bad guys". If you start with book one, realize that you are in for a few months of reading, you'll not be able to stop with book one, it just whets the appetite for the rest . .

Pleasantly surprised
At first when I read a rather large number of negative reviews I was kind of on the fence about reading this book, so I set it aside for a couple weeks and read Flanagans other series, The BrotherBand Chronicals (Which I loved) After finishing the last book of the series, so far, I decided to come back and finish up the story of Will. I have to say though, it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Although it lacked the action of suppose, book ten, it introduced the lively New character Maddie, completed the full arch of the series, and gave us a bit of action the last good 30% of the book (along with a little pay back) The only things I would have changed are A. Will should have been able to pick off the gang at the end easily. Look at the battle against the Senshi for example. He deserved some real competition. And B. Personally I'm the traditional type, and would have liked it if Maddie threw away her sling. I'm also glad we get to see Tug #1 again, I now feel almost content with book 11. Just wish the world of Rangers, and battle Axe wielding Giants never modernized. :( like I said, I'm traditional.

Anther great addition..... With some dissappointments
Alright here goes, this is my first amazon review but I felt that it was important to communicate my experience with this book. I've read all the rangers apprentice and brotherband books and loved every one of them. This is maybe one of the weaker books in the series and that isn't to say that its a bad book, flannagan delivers again and he delivers well. What is missing from this book is the grand adventure that is present in the others, there was always a serious threat to Araluen as a whole and that I feel is something that is missing from this book. I don't want to spoil anything but the centre piece of this book revolves around Will taking on a new apprentice Maddie and training her up, there is little to no "action" in the first part of this and instead focuses on charecter development, some May like this others may not, I for one welcomed the addition of a new charecter even if the choice was slightly too predictable. I felt that the strengths of this book lie with the rest of hi books- loveable charecters and good plot development and here it excels, the story for the most part I felt was strong. My 2 qualms with this book are what lead me to give this book a four star rating, one of those is the the enemies in this book, it doesn't live up to the grand adventure standard that has been so consistent ithroughout the series. I wouldn't mind so much if it were a simple matter for Will and Maddie to overcome them but it is not, I'm treading close to spoiler territory and I'll do my utmost not to spoil anything. ////THIS NEXT PARAGRAPH WILL CONTAIN PARTIAL SPOLIERS DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT A PURE READING EXPERIACNE, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY FINISHED THE BOOK Right now hopefully those reading now have read the book and so understand what I'm talking about, there is the moment when Will is captured while attempting to give Maddie time to escape. This is where my biggest qualm lies. I didn't understand why he didn't simply keep tug? All the men were on foot and it seemed to me that with the legendary accuracy he would be able to prevail? Again not my rodeo but I was a little taken aback at the ease that 11 men we're able to capture "the best ranger the corps has ever seen". The fact that these 11 men were not hardened warriors, not temujai, not expert swordswan from Nihon-Ja, not even on horseback, but common thieves, added insult to injury for me anyway, some may disagree with me here but that for me was raay let down. The other part that I wish was explored more was Alyss's death and it's impact on will, yes there we here the story and the depressed nature but I couldn't help but feel more time could have been spent on their relationship to build up her death a little, for me it was sad but not quite that tragic climax that it could have been. Again subjective but these two facts dropped huge book from a 5 to a 4 in my eyes at least. ////END OF THE SPOILERS now with all that out of the way a short summation is in order. For those who did read the spoiler section you may have got e impression that I disliked the book. This is far from the truth, I loved the book and finished over the course of 2 nights. What I did feel was that it could have been improved and at times it was a little down from the epic scale that they usually are. I still highly recommend this book to all that have enjoyed the series though I doubt I need to. I'll compare to it the first book, it adds a new charecter and spends time developing that charecter for further books and I can't wait to see where it takes us. Feel free to comment if you have questions or you feel my review missed some things or just sucked in general :) Thanks for reading Finn

Was a great novel all the way around, I cannot complain! Halt still makes me laugh even though he is not the primary subject of the book anymore and Will is absolutely amazing as an older man. Just like his mentor. Love them sooo much! Maddie is a different twist on the story, being a girl and royal. Like the fact that she is so proud of herself and then gets in trouble all the time with Will. Another real gem written by John Flanagan. Would recommend.

I recommend it as a must read for all RA fans. It feels like you are back in Book 1. I enjoyed reading this book. I was so engrossed in reading this book that I let my Kindle fall from my hands more than once. Deserves the 5 stars it gets. I would give it more stars if I had the option.

Forget the moaning Minnie's and negative Nora's who didn't think this book was very good or up to standard . (Seems like there always has to be someone who comes out with a negative without really explaining why .) This is an excellent book and to prove it I read it in a day - and it's a long time since I did that . The characters are well rounded and have developed from the first book . If you have read the series you can see all the characters develope . I won't give anything away but you can feel Will's loss and pain . The solution was well thought out and fitted in perfectly . As I've said to friends just because a book is aimed at teens/young adults doesn't mean you can't read it . I'm 61 and this series has been excellent , a real roller coaster . Loved the horses - Tug in particular . I cannot recommend this book higher . Read the series and then go onto The Brotherband series which are even better .
