Little Yellow D tin whistle - cute and perfect for beginners
- First, packaging: it was perfect! The tin whistle looked protected in its plastic case, but the tube packaging definitely added more protection and padding. - the tin whistle itself is just too cute. Yellow is my 10 YO daughter’s favourite colour. She was thrilled to have her own. I have already the Little Black D so I’m familiar with this model. It’s not expensive, quite solid, light weight, and easy to play right away. Of course, it requires practice (I already pictured myself playing along The Corrs when I got my first tin whistle). It’s a bit airy in the high notes, but practice will help control the pitch. It comes with some instructions (notes, finger chart) and a sheet music for 3 melodies. I’ve just placed an order for the blue tin whistle for my oldest daughter… our neighbours are going to be SO happy 😅

Tin whistles
These flutes or tin whistles are great. Our kids use them for a music class and enjoy playing with them at home too. Earplugs may help with practice 😉

Waltons whistles are brilliant.
Although the highlight of Waltons whistles is the unequaled Mellow D, the nickel-plated D and C whistles are fantastic. They might benefit from a minor tweak or two, but they have "pure" bell-like tones, oddly nice balance between octaves for such an inexpensive whistle, and usually arrive in better tune straight from the factory than their Generation, Feadog, Clarke, Oak, and Acorn counterparts. Waltons whistles, especially the Mellow D and the nickel ones, are the VERY best inexpensive whistle there is.

Finicky
This Walton’s tin whistle is noticeably more finicky with breath and harder to keep in tune than my old one. I have 2 kids that play sometimes and am adding a 3rd. There’s just no way a kindergartner can play this in tune when I can only get it right after warming it up for several minutes. When you don’t get it just right, sometimes it almost has a strange humming sound to go along with the terrible out of pitch noise that won’t change regardless of how I’m breathing. The barrels are shaped differently, so maybe that has something to do with it. I’m returning it and paying for the shipping on a better brand (still pink, of course!)

A solid whistle choice
I got the whistles in different colors because I’m teaching my girls to play whistle. Waltons make a nice sounding whistle that is consistent in production. I’ve collected almost every economy whistle (under $80, usually under $30) there is, including ones that have not been made for decades. I like a few other whistles well, but I can’t say I like them better than Waltons. As to some bad reviews I saw: the whistle is a diatonic instrument. I has the notes you need to play Irish trad (dance) music. D, G, e, a and a couple other modalities. Also, don’t sit on them, don’t drive over them, don’t use them to open paint cans. They are plenty sturdy if you don’t treat them poorly.

Normally I would simply return an item without a negative review in the rare instances when warranted, though in this case Amazon only covers 20 CAD for return shipping, and, it would likely cost approximately 40 CAD to ship it based on Canada Post's shipping cost estimator (Canada to US, small parcel). Considering the whistle costs only ~30 CAD, this means little to no return for my time and effort of shipping it. Take this as a warning, if you're ordering in Canada, and the whistle is not to your liking, then you're more-or-less out of luck. About the whistle itself, it was aesthetically a nice looking whistle for children, and other reviews of this low-cost whistle brand had me hopeful it would be of good-enough quality for beginners (e.g., was intending to give it to one of my students, whom currently uses one of my whistles for the time being). Unfortunately, the whistle was quite shrill on several notes, to the point that I wouldn't want to play it myself nor gift it to a student. Two stars rather than one because of the aesthetics and the useful plastic casing that came with it.
