I must have seen this years ago - but I didn't really recall - so we watched it. At first, it was difficult to get past all of the rumors I'd heard about Jerry Lewis with regard to his leading ladies (ignorance is bliss), but as I got into the movie it was clear to see that despite his rather negative qualities - he surely was a comedic genius. There were several scenes that I laughed so hard to where I was sure I busted something on my insides - at one point I couldn't even catch my breath - which is unusual for me. Probably the funniest Jerry Lewis movie ever - - - IMO.

Fresh off his success with the self-directed "The Nutty Professor" in 1963, Jerry Lewis re-united (for the 7th time) with director Frank Tashlin for this comedy set within a department store. Lewis again plays another well-meaning schnook named Norman Pfiffer, an odd-jobs dog walker who just so happens to be in love with bubbly Jill St. John---much to the ire of her mother, Phoebe Tuttle (Agnes Moorehead, of "Bewitched" fame), owner of Tuttle's Dept. Store. Mom immediately schemes to break up the two lovebirds by hiring Norman & discourage him with the most impossible jobs, with the help of floorwalker Mr. Quimby (Ray Walston of "My Favorite Martian" fame). This premise is pretty much the entire framework of the movie. But who cares? It's the fun of watching Lewis bumble his way--though successfully, somehow--from one crazy job to the next.Lewis is backed up by a good cast, such as Moorehead, Walston, St. John, and John McGivers as the down-trodden "figurehead" Mr. Tuttle, who finally learns to stand up to his wife.Again, Tashlin knew how to best utilize his star in some of the wackiest moments. Who can forget Lewis trying to paint a flag pole, make a golf simulator go haywire, grapple with a "lady gorilla" of a customer in the shoe section, jog in a publicity-generated endurance test, and work in the sporting section with big-game equipment? But the topper has to be the climactic gag with Lewis trying to wrangle a vacuum cleaner gone berserk. This is a deliriously outrageous sight-gag marathon as half the store gets inhaled by this thing.Another stellar Lewis-Tashlin collaboration, and another keeper for Lewis fans!

Jerry Lewis and other talented actors will keep you laughing in this family movie classic. If you appreciate physical comedy, this film is right up your alley as Jerry Lewis' character creates chaos in various departments as an employee of a large store. "Who's Minding the Store" is probably Jerry Lewis' best movie. Agnes Moorhead who played Samantha's mother on the TV series "Bewitched" pulled off a stellar performance as Jerry's employer and future mother-in-law who is a mettling, devious woman determined to stop Jerry's character from marrying her daughter.

I have a collection of approximately 700 movies on disc and was glad to add this one to the list. Rather expensive for an older movie, one of Jerry's best, and a must have for a Jerry Lewis fan. Clean fun for entire family, without the need for 4 letter words throughout as in the case with today's movies.

From the dufass falling in love with the multi-millionaire's daughter, to the mother-in-law to be trying to kill off her daughter's fiancee, you will spend the better part of 90 minutes laughing uncontrollably. NO FOUL LANGUAGE, very-very vague sexual innuendos, believable attempts to harm the dufass, great chemistry between characters, and superb acting! What more could one want in a FAMILY NIGHT MOVIE. We watched it on Christmas Day 2014 with my twenty-year old son and his step siblings, of approximate ages, and all were sore from laughing when it was over! ENJOY!

Irgendwie werden die FIlme von Jerry Lewis nur noch selten im Fernsehen gezeigt. Seltsam - in meiner Kindheit in den 70er Jahren kamen diese Slapstik-Filme noch recht oft, insbesondere auch die Filme, in denen Jerry Lewis mit Dean Martin gemeinsam auftrat, wobei Lewis immer der etwas naive Pechvogel war, während Martin meist den Frauenheld verkörperte.Beim "Ladenhüter" hingegen handelt es sich um einen Solofilm, in dem Jerry Lewis einen gutmütigen Mann spielt, der in eine Frau verliebt, die aus einem reichen Elternhaus stammt - was er aber nicht ahnt. Die Mutter seiner Angebeteten ist strikt dagegen, dass die Tochter einen armen Schlucker heiratet und sorgt dafür, dass er im Kaufhaus, in dem er als Aushilfe einen Job bekommt, immer die unmöglichsten Aufträge bekommt mit dem Ziel, ihn zum Scheitern zu bringen und ihn vor den Augen der Tochter bloßzustellen. Das gibt natürlich Raum für jede Menge Situationskomik und insbesondere natürlich den ständigen Kampf mit der "Tücke des Objekts" in den einzelnen Abteilungen des Kaufhauses, in die Lewis nach und nach versetzt wird.So muss er in luftiger Höhe den Knopf am Ende einer Fahnenstange streichen, einer Ringkämperin auf deren Wunsch viel zu kleine Schuhe anziehen, in der Feinkostabteilung geräucherte Insekten vertilgen, wird Opfer der Schnäppchenjäger beim Schlussverkauf, die ihn bis auf's Hemd ausziehen, er wird beinahe von einem Großbildfernseher erschlagen, muss bis zum Umfallen Sport treiben, um müde genug für den Matratzentest zu sein und wird danach in die Waffenabteilung versetzt, wo er Gewehre verkaufen muss, die so schwer sind, dass er sie kaum tragen kann. Schließlich bringt er einen Staubsauger, der die halbe Einrichtung des Kaufhauses einsaugt, zum explodieren.Die bekannteste Szene dürfte die "unsichtbare Schreibmaschine" sein, auf der Lewis zum Takt der Musik einen Brief schreibt.Der Film spielt (erstaunlich für den Beginn der 1960er Jahre mit Rollenklischees: Der Held der Geschichte ist überzeugt davon, dass der Mann im Haus das Geld verdienen muss und die Frau zu Hause sitzen und sich um die Kinder kümmern soll, während im Kaufhaus jedoch umgekehrt die Frauen "die Hosen anhaben". So wird er von der Catcherin auf die Matte gelegt und er gerät ins Schussfeld einer Großwildjägerin.

Introuvable en DVD sur le marché français, il s'agit ici d'une édition allemande mais qu'importe, ce chef de rayon est inoubliable :)

This movie is a classic! Love, love it! I have it on VHS, and now have it on dvd. I've brought it into my workplace for the residents to watch ( I work in a group home for mentally challenged adults). They absolutely love this movie. Lots of laughs.
