I Need a New Butt!

I had a strong suspicion "I Need a New Butt!" would resonate with my 4-year-old’s sense of humor, and wow, was I right. Just reading the title sent her into fits of giggles. The premise – a kid who thinks his butt is broken and goes on an imaginative journey to find a new one (an armor-plated butt? A rocket butt?) – is exactly the kind of wonderfully absurd stuff she loves. We must have read it five times the first day. The Good Stuff (Pros): Off-the-Walls Silliness: This book doesn't take itself seriously for a second, and that's why it's so great. My daughter finds the whole idea, and especially the increasingly wacky butt suggestions, hilarious. Fuels Creativity: The wild ideas for new butts really got my daughter’s own imagination going. She started brainstorming her own silly butt designs, which was fun to see. Fun to Read Aloud: The rhyming text has a good rhythm, making it enjoyable for me to read and for her to listen to. She's even starting to shout out the rhyming words. Expressive Artwork: The illustrations are a huge part of the charm – they’re bright, funny, and perfectly capture the silliness of each potential new butt. Could Be Better (Cons): Purely for Fun: If you're after a book with a profound lesson or a quiet, gentle story, this definitely isn't it. It’s 100% about being goofy. "Butt" is the Star: The word "butt" appears. A lot. We think it's hilarious in this context, but if that word makes you cringe, this might not be your cup of tea. The "Crack" Conundrum: The story kicks off because the boy sees his butt has a "crack." It's all very innocent in the book, but it did lead to a brief, literal-minded anatomical Q&A session with my daughter afterward! Bottom Line: This book is a massive hit for us – it's funny, it's creative, and it makes my daughter laugh until her belly aches. If your child loves zany humor and you're okay with the prominent theme of "butts," I can't recommend this one enough. It’s become an instant classic in our rotation.

This is actually one of my son’s favorite books….and mine! He thinks butts and toots are hilarious, so buying this book was a no-brainer! He laughs every time we read it.

I bought this book to read to my grandkids over FaceTime during the Pandemic. They loved it; roared with laughter and have asked for it several times since. However, there are some words that were difficult for them and that required some explanation, as well as help when they came over and wanted to read it themselves. They were 5 and 7 years old. Both are ahead of their grade levels in reading now, but the younger one was barely reading at the time. He is now reading quite well and I guess maybe reading above his level helped! Still, I think maybe I was a little ahead of his age in choosing this book for him. Both kids needed explanations of several of the harder words, but they love the book nonetheless.

I bought this book for my grandson who is almost 2 1/2. He loves the book and asks multiple times a day to have the book read to him. He laughs at the appropriate parts. He is telling his mom that he needs a new butt. He also goes around telling his dad that his butt crack is showing and laughing like it’s the funniest thing he has ever heard. All details he got from the book. Best book ever.
