Stating what might not be obvious...
Firstly, my drive was a new drive (as confirmed with SMART) and it is running great. I did a manufacturer serial number check and it did list 2 years available BUT per Hitachi's policies, that number means nothing. NOTE WELL: THIS IS WHAT AMAZON LISTS AS THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PRODUCT! "Important Information Seller Warranty Description One year Seller warranty" Therefore, one should NOT be deducting for the product as listed because the warranty is not what you hoped or desired. Do NOT buy this drive expecting a warranty other than what is stated - a one year warranty from the seller, NOT the manufacturer. I ordered my drive from OceanSide. It came well packed in a sealed anti-static bag caged in foam in a box surrounded by bubble wrap in an Amazon box. I ordered the drive 30 minutes before the overnight shipping deadline and received it the next morning by 10AM. I bought this drive knowing the risk that having a "One year Seller warranty" entails. This item is substantially less expensive than a new retail or true OEM version with a manufacturer warranty. Again, do NOT buy this drive if you want to be ensured the manufacturer will support it because that is YOUR RISK knowing that Amazon states "One year Seller warranty". If you want a great drive at a great price and don't mind the seller warranty, then THIS DRIVE IS FOR YOU.

Something not right here.
I ordered 6 of these using amazon prime. They were sold by Oceanside Store. I installed them in my QNAP TS-870 Pro. Seemed to be working as expected. I was getting a little low on storage space, so I ordered another. This one was via amazon prime from Stellar Trading. It showed in a box wrapped in bubble wrap. The plastic wrapper that the hard drive was in was previously opened...seal cut open and no desiccant in the wrapper. When I read the label on the hard drive itself...it was a 4 TB Seagate Barracuda drive. ST 4000DM00. PN: 1F22168-568. Not what I ordered. I was not able to get the return processed online. I spoke with an agent from amazon and got the return and shipping label no problem. The agent said they would be checking into what was going on. Then I read some of the bad reviews here on Amazon and realized that many have complained about the issue of these being torn out of external drive cases and sold as new with no warranty. I did not read where anyone had received a different drive though. That got me thinking about the other 6 drives I just installed. So, I went to the HGST website and went to verify warrant eligibility. All 6 drives serial numbers are "invalid serial". Toshiba tech support is closed now. I will have to call tomorrow to find out what is going on. I have a strong suspicion that these 6 drives have no warranty. I will follow up here soon. I just got off the phone with HGST. All 6 serial numbers from the drives I bought were from external hard drive enclosures. He said there is no warranty since they were removed from an external case. I thought the sealed bag with the desiccant meant it was new. He said it is easy to get the equipment to seal up a hard drive in a bag. Amazons web site shows these as new with a 3 year warranty...that is not the case. HGST Deskstar 3.5-Inch 4TB 7200 RPM SATA III 6Gbps 64MB Cache Internal Hard Drive (0F14681) (HDS724040ALE640) They are going back. I want new with a 3 year warranty. Not looking forward to transferring 15 TB of data to new drives again.

Great Hard Drive, runs fast and smooth
Comes as an OEM HDD so no cables which I didn't need anyways. Running on my ASUS mobo for almost a year and no problems. I own a HGST Deskstar 3TB for 2 years now and was extremely pleased with its performance so I purchased the 4TB version. Fast and smooth performance, will purchase again.

More BIGGER drives please
With a little expensive 250GB SSD boot drive, these big spinning drives are becoming very CHEAP. (per GB of storage) I have bought several Hitachi large (over 2TB) spinning drives,,, they perform flawlessly. No noise,,, except when Windoze goes into some stupid shut down mode because I don't use all the drives every few minutes. But, it's just a dull 'click' and and it's at full speed reading the directory. I was worried about heat - but, don't see a problem, The biggest problem is,,, when you replace a 1TB with a 4TB - you are only getting 3TB - - that old 1TB pile o'files needs to go some place.

Misleading Warranty
I bought two of these drives on 10/21/13. After reading some reviews that Oceanside had sold drives that had no warranty (because they were taken from external drives which voided the warranty), I checked my drives' serial numbers on the HGST website ([...]). While my drive did have a warranty, it was NOT the three year warranty that was advertised. The website said my warranty expired in Oct 2015, thus giving me a two year warranty instead of three. I would have returned them but I did not discover this until my return period had expired. As far as how they work, I put them into a Synology DiskStation 2-Bay Network Attached Storage device (DS213j) in a RAID mirrored configuration. So far they work fine, but it is mainly for backed-up data and I rarely access it. I am giving them two stars for the misleading advertising.

HGST is a good brand. Had very good service from many of them but not this unit. New technology. Within 3 months, I reformatted it twice. I replaced it with an HGST Ultrastar that has been flawless since installed.

I ignored the bad reviews. I bought four of these drives and inspected them and the SMART data shows they are brand new. They are not re-sealed and they have never been spun-up (powered-on) drives. They are just bulk drives sealed in a mylar bag with foam cradle and a custom branded box with the store name on it.
