Can this sword be used in sparring?

No this sword is meant for cutting, since it is very sharp, and a hardened blade. I would not recommend sparring with this even if you dulled all edges. bamboo shinai , and synthetic swords are better for sparring.

I've read elsewhere that state that metallurgic testing of the blade yielded 1045 high carbon steel. Not 1060. Is the info in the listing incorrect?

I can testify to this.....Is it 1065 ? Not sure..... I do own this and many others and I bought this as a beater to cut small branches and weeds and cut water noodles and such. Best quality blade at even close to the price. I accidentally hit a huge rock under a shrub I was cutting down to the ground and on a pretty hard swing it went right through the branch and smashed into a rock just under the surface to a sickening whack. I thought for sure the blade would have shattered. It barely put a couple tiny chips in the very edge of the tip. Fixable with a whetstone and some patience. I am ordering another of the same one to keep without abusing. I have seen katanas that cost three to five times more that would have shattered with the hit this survived.
