can you run warm water through this or only cold?

Per the manufacturer's instructions for optimal use: Use with cold water only. Do not run hot water (above 100 deg F / 38 deg C) through the filter as it may damage the filter. So bypass the filter when you need hot water, and only run water from the COLD side when using the filter.

How is this better than pitcher filters? Is it just convenience (more water faster), or does it purify more/better?

One person answered pitcher filters only remove some things. This is only partially true. Berkey and Clearly Filtered remove almost 100% of everything. Brita- not so much
