Maybe an inch to inch and a quarter. The pad self inflates, so give it 5 minutes for full thickness. The pillow sucks.i ripped mine off.

No, I don't smell it at all. It even got wet while camping.

The straps ripped right off the first time I rolled it up. I barely even pulled them snug. Has this happened to anyone else?

Had the same thing happen to me the first time I used it and I was packing it up, tightened the straps and the tore loose from the pad edge where they were riveted. The edge needs to be reinforced or sewn together to prevent this.
