One wrong move can undercut your message. Believe it or not, our bodies speak louder than our words. Postures, gestures, and expressions convey reams of information—and often not what you’d expect. A smile, for example, is usually considered welcoming. However, crook one corner of your mouth higher and you project superiority, subconsciously chasing other people away. This book explains how even the subtlest motions have meaning. Distilling decades of research, Without Saying a Word deciphers these unspoken signals: facial expressions, fleeting micro expressions, positive body language, negative body language, And much more! Discover which postures and gestures indicate confidence and build rapport—and which reveal disinterest, arrogance, or even aggression. Learn to end off-putting habits, accentuate good ones, and become an authentic and effective communicator. Exhibiting body language that is open, honest, and self-assured increases your social influence and enhances your skill as a negotiator while the ability to read the emotions and intentions of others is equally indispensable. Whether you’re making a presentation, pitching a project, or closing a deal, the right body language can be your best ally. Review: Amazing Value - So Much Practical Information for a Great Price! - This book is amazing! It's a great balance between practical, actionable knowledge about body language and micro expressions, and the science and academic background to help round out that knowledge. A little about why I picked up this book: I got interested in learning more about micro expressions after watching the TV series Lie to Me. I looked at the courses from Paul Ekman – the psychologist that inspired the series – but didn't want to pay that much money right now. Looking at other companies that offered similar training, I found the Wezowskis and this book. It seemed like a reasonable amount of money to spend to dip my toes into this subject while also including info on body language which is a great bonus. I think this book is exactly what I needed. Starting with learning about body language is awesome because it's easier to see for a beginner like me. After studying that and trying to practice intentionally interpreting it in everyday situations, I think I'll be ready to start trying to notice the much more subtle micro expressions. And that's exactly how the book is structured – body language, then micro expressions! There are also some really nice examples at the end of the book to try reading real-life situations. I'm also impressed with the scholarship of the book. It has an extensive bibliography and many citations throughout the text if you're interested in seeing the studies about body language and micro expressions. However, the text never feels dry, lengthy, or superfluous – every expression is discussed in enough detail without going into unnecessary detail or using overly academic language. Finally, just to show you I'm not biased, I'll mention the only flaw I've found in the book: the hand-drawn illustrations. Not all of them, mind you; most of them are really good and reduce distractions that might have existed if photographs had been used. However, there are a few that aren't as crisp and professional-looking as the others. That being said, they do all still draw your attention to the right things: the face, or hands, or body as applicable so after you get used to them, they won't detract from your understanding and learning. This book is definitely worth the price. If you're interested in starting to intentionally learn about body language and micro expressions, I don't think you can go wrong with this book! Review: Must read if you interact with others!!! - Kasia and Patryk discuss not only body language but micro-expressions as well. They have spent many years researching body language and how it subconsciously plays a role in sales /negotiations, love /dating, lie detection, and our overall communication. They have found that the use of body language and the ability to decipher it contributes immensely to our success. ”Your body language always wants to tell the truth about how you are feeling ”, so once you master the art of nonverbal communication it is like being given the gift to read people’s minds. This book is an excellent text not only for reading other's body language, but to also understand how your own body language may affect others. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it; it is very fresh and clarifying, I highly recommend it, you will learn to read body language and will be able to understand others behavior without talking much. It is necessary if you work with people every day. Kasia and Patryk are experts in the field of nonverbal communication. Their work is backed by scientific research so the information provided in this book is not based on speculation, it has been tested and validated by science. One of the advantages of this book is that it takes the information and explains how to apply it to your everyday life by using real-life scenarios. It’s a straightforward and well-written book. The information you want to know is easy to find and to understand. There are a lot of interesting little bits of information everywhere and it a great read. Also, at the end of each chapter, there is a summary that reinforces what you just learned. If you want to be more persuasive, gain confidence, be better in sales or just be a great communicator this is a must read!

Pro: Great, useful and overall informing content; Con: lack of goal-oriented practical scenarios
This book gave me a great overview of various body language signals and facial expressions. It even provides fun and educating practice examples in the back as to how to read body language. However, what fell short was some goal-oriented information that I was looking for. In general it is vaguely stated what to do when the opposing person sends negative body language signals, but I wish there were some realistic examples. For example: "Man X is trying to flirt and get Woman Y to go on a date. Woman Y shows disgust by doing Z after Man X asked her about her family. How can he change the subject/his body language to move the conversation back into the positive?" Just examples like that would have been a nice addition for further practical use. But the book is still worth the buy for whoever is wondering. Lots of interesting information that is backed by research.

Body Language is Key to Better Dates, Interviews & Team Meetings
This book is a clear and well-crafted guide to the ins and outs of body language. Interpreting body language accurately is a major component of Emotional Intelligence, which drives success. As the authors say, body language doesn't lie, so learning to send and receive appropriate signals, including micro-expressions (fleeting facial expressions) can be the key to successful dating, interviewing, networking, negotiating, and team interactions. There's a fine line between confident body language and "negative" body language (aggressive, having the opposite of intended effect), and this book gives helpful insights to both sides as well as practice exercises designed to improve interpretation of body language. In short, body language is an additional channel of communication that we overlook at our own peril. If you want to be sure that your overall body/being is in sync with the words coming out of your mouth, you need to read this book!

Meh
Introduced the subject at a high level. Mostly commonly known information with some not common to a lay audience. Made little attempt to rank relative predictive strength of various signals nor accuracy. A book like this should have relied on imagery of actual people interacting rather than illustrations. The few actors facial poses were exaggerated and commonly known gestures. Supplemental video would have made the book much more useful.

A fantastic book for learning to read and use body language.
I have recently became a fan of Kasia and Patryk’s work. “Without Saying a Word” is a great book for beginners in reading body language and more advanced students. There are so many body language books and videos out there, it’s hard to tell what’s accurate and what’s not. Kasia and Patryk have years of knowledge and an enthusiasm for sharing it. I love that they begin this book focusing on positive body language. So many books only focus on reading negative body language and how to tell if someone is lying. And while they do cover that here, it’s great to see the positive covered too. If you’re learning about body language, I highly recommend “Without Saying a Word”.

that's an amazing book that will change the way you look at people
This book not only teaches you the meaning of different postures and gestures but also explains why it is so. It clarifies why we show our palms or open our abdomen while speaking to some people. The content is super useful! You begin to observe people and to notice how they sit or stand. There are also a lot of pictures and you have everything drawn. And it's perfect because you don't have to imagine what this or that pose look like. The book is really easy to read. There are no difficult terms and even if there are, they are always easily explained. WHat I really like about this book is that the authors say that you should change your attitude to a situation (or whatever) rather than copy ''self-confident'' gestures. The authors approach the matter thoroughly.

A Needed 21st Century Update To The Body Language Model
Kasia and Patryk Wezowski's Without Saying A Word is a strong and authoritative update on the the body language model. Besides an update with new information on the high probability of meaning on what has become somewhat common knowledge on broad body language signals, i.e., crossed arms means defiance or defensive attitude, what the newer and higher level of the body language model defines as facial "Microexpressions" means to a high level of accuracy. All told and shown with pictures (B&W) and pencil drawings. You do know what these postures very likely means? 1. When someone crosses their legs to a 90 degree angle? 2. What can different sizes of one's pupils mean? 3. Is it true that liars blink a lot more than average when lying? 4. Is it possible to 'cluster' body signals to effect a more accurate read on someone? If so, how to for best results? All will be made clear after reading, well studying this book. A useful summary grid is presented after each chapter. A deep and not boring dive onto the razor's edge on how to learn what people are really saying through their attempts to hide their true feelings, intentions, etc., rather than just relying on what they say. Ideal for negotiators, crisis managers, sales reps, professional poker players and determining if he or she is really into you. My only criticism is the pictures in the Microexpressions section would have had more impact if they were in color. However I understand the added expense the authors would have endured publishing with color pictures. P.S. For you negative and suspicious folks, I brought this softcover edition book with no agreement to give a good review to the authors. This book's content earned my positive review.

Splendido

A practical book on body language
A no-nonsense book on body language. The tone is engaging and easy to read, and full of information at the same time. There are many books on body language, and this one is a nice addition, because it is not solely a catalog of body language positions, it aims to be a practical book on the most useful and clear body language signals one can encounter in everyday life (especially in business life). As such, it is not an exhaustive review of each and every position and gesture one can find --only the most clear and frequent signals are discussed. That makes it easier to concentrate on what is most important, and despite the number of signals included, it is not overwhelming. What I liked about this book: At the beginning of each chapter, there is a short bullet-points list to explain what we will learn, and at the end of each chapter, there is a very useful summary to memorize what has just been said. These small details make the book easier (for me at least) to apply, not just to read (which is the point with such a book after all, isn't it?). The chapters on Facial Expressions, Microexpressions and Decisionmaking are especially useful. I liked also the section on how to react to negative body language. At the end of the book, there is a chapter with exercices to test yourself, wich is a nice way to begin practicing!

Very detailed and applicable
The book is a thorough guide to body language. Sometimes you can’t quite figure out what is being communicated but when you can sense it (i.e. decoding subtle body language) you have a step up from other people. Highly recommend this book, it details all the subtle nuances. It will help you at work. If you manage people it will help you become a better people person. Understanding body language Is a highly valued skill in social interactions. This book is not too difficult to read. Has lots of research but easily understandable. My personal interest in body language is for self defence reasons. Awareness is the first form of self defence. Learning to read a situation is key & body language is a strong component of it, your’s and any potential attacker’s. Confident body language makes you less of a target. Situational awareness can save your ass on the streets more times than any martial arts moves and is often overlooked.
