Product description CD desertcart.com Irish troubadour Damien Rice doesn't so much reinvent the folk genre on this lush, impossibly mature debut album as push its boundaries in several compelling musical directions at once--all the more remarkable considering the album was largely self-produced and home-recorded. His songs revolve around familiar, bittersweet concerns of life, love, and their attendant frustrations, but delivered with conspiratorial intimacy on melodic wings (like on the graceful "Cannonball") that Rice seems almost embarrassed to share. If there's anything like a template here, it's "The Blower's Daughter," the song that first attracted the interest/stewardship of film composer David Arnold (whose guest production provides "Amie" with expansive cinematic elegance) and became a massive Irish hit. His plaintive vocal, embroidered by the mournful solo cello of Vyvienne Long, is suddenly brightened by an instrumental flourish and Lisa Hannigan's vocals--before just as quickly wafting on the breeze. With touches that range from "Day in the Life"-styled string collages to the dizzy, exhilarating neo-operatic excesses of the 16-minute "Eskimo," Rice's musical palate here is as adventurous as his songs are grounded in emotional intimacy. --Jerry McCulley Review: Great album, Damian Rice is so talented and this is a great press - It's nice to have an album that you can play from start to finish and it doesn't disrupt the house too much, great calm background. I've seen him in concert and it's amazing what he can do with some loops and one guy on many instruments--so many talents! Review: As advertised - As advertised

Can't find the words
I bought this CD without ever having heard a track or anything about it. I only bought it because it kept coming up on my recommendation list from Amazon. I buy a lot of cd's and it is not unusual for me to give them a quick listen and then despite my best intentions, never listen to them again. I popped this into my computer early on a Saturday morning when I was alone, put on the headphones, and started to visit some web sites. Almost immediately I stopped thinking about anything but the music. This guy was reaching into my soul. All that I wanted to do was listen intently. This is going to sound like an odd comparison, but the last time I felt this way about an album was the first time I heard "Dark Side of the Moon". On the very first listen everything seemed to fit perfectly together. The songs connect to each other in such a unique and subtle fashion. Since that first listen I have put this CD in my car and have listened to it on my commute to and from work every day. I find myself driving slower or taking the long way so I can hear all of the songs. When I wake up in the morning I start thinking about when my first chance will be to listen to it. This CD is certainly not for everybody. Those of you that like artists like Ryan Adams, Leonard Cohen, Rufus Wainwright or some of the others mentioned in other reviews will not be dissapointed.

Worth taking the time to listen to
I had never heard of Damien Rice until I went to scotland for the semester and everyone who listened to him had nothing but amazing things to say about him and I completely understand now. He sings with emotion that isn't seen very often and it adds something to everyone of his songs. Somehow through his lyrics and playing you feel exactly what he is feeling when he plays these songs. I have to say my favorite song is cannonball, and that is one of the more popular songs on the album but I think its one of the best. Volcano is another amazing song that has a haunting rhythem and is just another good work. I Remember is just an emotionally charged song with Lisa Hannigan singing the first half and Damein finishing the rest. One of the best cds i've heard in a while and I am shamelessly trying to get all of my friends into it because it is just that good.

Melancholic artistry
I first heard Damien Rice's Delicate as the background music in some shop. I memorized the words (nobody could tell me who the singer was) and I googled the lyrics when home. In less than an hour, I ordered all his CDs. Yes, you might say Damien is (sometimes) too much. His melancholy; his pace; his pain; his bitterness. But you can't help keep wanting the embrace of his art. And his voice (with the occasional help of Lisa Hannigan, a hit of her own) puts you in such distant places... For wandering alone in some pasture of your mind, this is a great vehicle. I truly recommend it.

What Do Amy Winehouse & Damien Rice Have in Common?
Stay with me on this one. I originally purchased this CD because I fell in love with that haunting little number from the movie "Closer". I couldn't shake this song and bought the whole CD (this was before I joined the modern age and bought an Ipod and could have just downloaded the one song, "The Blower's Daughter"). I hated it when I had to buy a whole CD for one song. What was the likelihood that lightning was going to strike twice and I'd like even one more song on the CD? So I gave the whole CD a listen to a few times. Did I love every song? No. But I discovereed, "Delicate", "Volcano" and "Cannonball", songs that I have come to love that even surpassed my love of "The Blower's Daughter" and couldn't imagine my life without these songs. Lightening struck 4 times here. If not for the purchase of the CD, Damien Rice would never have even been on my radar and I wound up loving the other songs more than for the one I originally purchased it for. Okay, you've hung in here long enough for the relationship between Amy Winehouse and Damien Rice. Here is my answer: I orginally bought Amy's CD for just one song too - "Rehab" and had long ago discovered other songs on the CD that surpassed my love for "Rehab". So now Amy and Damien are in my club of "CDs purchased for one specific song and I wound up loving the other songs previously unknown to me even more". Don't you love when this happens?

Some very beautiful songs here
I think this is Damien's best. I don't love every song on it, but it has several that are seriously beautiful. The songs, Delicate, Volcano, Older Chests and The Blowers Daughter, are all hauntingly beautiful in only the way that Damien Rice can manage. I try to support the artists I like by purchasing the entire CD rather than just the songs, and I prefer discs above mp3s. The gorgeous harmonies that seem to have a very natural flow between he and Lisa Hannigan are worth the price of the CD, in my opinion. The fact that their voices have such similar cadence and tonal qualities, makes the music they created together, unique. This was one of the best duos I've ever heard. Very, very pretty music.

Other than some SLIGHT surface noise and imperfections on side C, the rest is as good as it gets! My order was fulfilled by Rarewaves-CA, and they gave me an arrival window of September 12 - October 2. I placed the order on August 21. It arrived today (August 30)!
