Hellboy

If there's ever a super hero who has been misused in the cinematic universe, it's easily Hellboy. The character was originally created by Mike Mignola and his first cinematic outing was this film in 2004. The movie is based on the original comic titled, Seed of Destruction. It was directed by the fantastic Guillermo del Toro and stars the fantastic (but loonie) Ron Perlman as Hellboy. The story goes that Rasputin (yes, the same) fails in his attempt to awaken the imprisoned Ogdru Jahad. During this attempt, Hellboy comes into our world as a little red monkey. He's brought up to fight against demon's and all sorts. In modern times, Rasputin is resurrected and plans the destruction of civilisation with the help of our red friend. If you've read the original comic, you'll know the story. It's a little different in places but the similarities are there. However, if you're unfamiliar with Mignola's work. Prepare for some weird things. Hellboy is a film that really stands out. It was quite different back then and I couldn't imagine something this creative being made today. del Toro really outdid himself with the creation of this film. The character designs, the music, the atmosphere and vibe are all very unique and extremely memorable. Perlman oozes charisma, as he always does and the supporting cast do a great job behind him. John Hurt deserves the honourable mention as he is wonderful as Hellboy's adoptive father, Professor Broom. The 4k transfer of the movie is about as perfect as you can get. The movie has always looked great on home media, but this just looks stunning. The clarity is spot on and the colours are quite something. The detail in the shadows is also impressive. The scene where you can barely see Hellboy's hooves is now sharp and highly detailed. It no longer looks drowned out in darkness. You can see every bit of detail in all its demonic glory. The high definition detail of the Hellboy make up and outfit, as well as Abe's blue fishiness etc is wonderful to see. Some of the CGI isn't perfect and looks its age but the overall artistic nature of the film hides it a bit. I have owned multiple of copies of this film and this by far the best Hellboy has looked. It's a fantastic transfer and a must have for fans of the character. It's an excellent and highly underappreciated film in my opinion. Well worth picking up!

Red & Blue and Liz are all brilliant as well as Manny. Love the franchise. Always have, golden army is a top tier movie as well.

HELLBOY follows the story of a demon called HellBoy who works with the bureau of paranormal research and defence to combat supernatural threats with the help of his team, not to mention being guided by his adoptive father who is a professor. It has a good plot with interesting characters, both heroes and villains. The video quality is great. The film has aspects of action, adventure and some funny bits. The bonus features include deleted scenes with optional commentary, featurettes, Hellboy the seeds of creation documentary and directors commentary. All bonus features are in standard definition. Despite what is said in other reviews, this is not a steel case but just a normal blue ray case. Overall it is a great film.

Writer and director Guillermo de Toro 2004 production brings to the big screen the comic book character "Hellboy" based on the Dark Horse comic series by Mike Mignola. This film which was released on Blu-ray in 2007 on a region free 50GB disc which has been encoded using MPEG-4 codec in full 1080p resolution in the original cinema aspect ratio of 1.85, comparing the region 1 DVD version of this movie I had against this UK released Blu-ray, the HD transfer shows it has a greater colour palette than the DVD this release also has a better range of hues and blacks which are deeper and of greater variation. The real star of this release is the uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio which when played against Dolby Digital 5.1 version, the PCM soundtrack brings the whole audio playback to life with better all round sound performance, with easier to understand dialogue, a wider soundstage to the music and the bigger sound to the gunfire, hand to hand combat and speaker shaking explosions have an even more satisfying bass sound. There are also audio tracks on this disc in Spanish PCM 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. There are also subtitles for the hard of hearing in English, Hindi and Spanish, there is also a director's commentary and the special features are in standard definition and follow the same contents as the double DVD released earlier a great addition to any action fan's Blu-ray collection.

Great film

It was good but would have been better if Hellboy was bright pink. Fast delivery.

This is a movie based on a comic book character (though, admittedly, a most unusual comic book character) that doesn't SEEM like a movie based on a comic book character — mainly because, while it has plenty of action, it also has plenty of character development and numerous instances of witty and interesting dialog. See the other reviews for more detail and/or other opinions regarding the plot of the movie. VIDEO: 1.85:1 • Color • 1080p • MPEG-4 AVC (25.9 Mbps) The images presented in this movie are fairly sharp, with very good delineation of objects in the deep shadows (of which, there are many). Also, the image possesses a muted color-palette that works very well with the tone of the source material. However, the entire film appeared ever-so-slightly soft, and lacking in fine detail — as was evident in many of the close-ups of faces, clothing and the many occult artifacts (it was as though someone was a little too vigorous in the use of the "sharpness" control when transferring the film). Aside from some infrequent occurrences of banding (particularly around the dropped light-sticks when Abe was swimming in the underwater cavern), there were no other major picture anomalies (such as: specks, hair-lines, white dots, color fluctuations, etc.) to mar the image. Overall, this movie's picture quality, while very good, is another example of the learning curve that was encountered by those who transferred movies to blu-ray in the early days of the format: that is, usually more than adequate, but could be better (nothing that a remastering using current techniques and technology couldn't fix). AUDIO: LPCM 5.1 (48KHz, 16-bit) • Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbps) I listened to the LPCM track all the way through, and compared several short sections of the standard Dolby Digital track to the LPCM track. The midrange and high-end sections of the LPCM track (particularly with voices and music) were more life-like and had greater detail than the lossly Dolby Digital track. However, the Dolby Digital track seemed to have more prominent, and slightly deeper, bass than the LPCM track — though, neither featured very deep bass. The surround channels were fairly active and somewhat directional, dialog was cleanly recorded and well-placed, and ambient sounds that convey the location of the on-screen setting were effectively integrated into the soundtrack. The LPCM version is a very good (though not great) soundtrack, which should satisfy all but the pickiest listeners. - Côté visuel, le film est de bonne qualité, et ne donne pas d'impression de master 720p (ou de moindre qualité). Très bonne gestion des noirs, le grain est plutôt absent, mais la qualité d'image est assez inégale sur l'ensemble de l'œuvre pour les effets spéciaux. Donc, cette édition Blu-ray donne un bon résultat. - La bande-son (FR) est de bonne qualité (5.1 Dolby Digital AC3), même si ça aurait pu être mieux. Néanmoins, l'effet multidirectionnel est bien géré et les dialogues sont limpides. Malgré un format Dolby Digital (AC3), la version française reste très correct. - Côté bonus, c'est pas mal : Commentaire audio du réalisateur; Hellboy : la Genèse; Scènes supplémentaires; Les effets visuels; Test maquillage et lumière; Petit guide sur les comics. Il y donc de quoi faire. En bref : Ce produit a un bon rapport qualité/prix; pour les fans du héros rouge à cornes. !!! Emballage franchement sommaire, donc zéro pointé pour Amazon !!!

Ok....with Golden Army, um Hellboy II for those unaware, just under a month away from it's DVD release I thought it would be nice to go back and review the one that started it all. First I got to tell you I love Hellboy Comics and if you have never sat down to read one of these gems or a TPB (Trade Paperback...again for the unaware)...then you really are selling yourself short. You need to get past that whole comics are for kids hang up. Because while Hellboy comics are fun and the way most comics should be produced, but arent (hint hint Marvel and DC)...they are most assured not your child's fair. Anyway....back to the movie. First off How can a movie be anything less then great when you mix Demons, Nazis, Chic's in flames, Monsters, End of the world, and for a lack of a better word...a very proper english talking and walking fish stick. I won't bored you with some long drawn out review discussing camera angles and lighting....there are those reviews here keep scrolling. I'm here to tell you without spoiling the plot...if you haven't seen it....then buy it. Do you like scary movies with a touch of humor? Do you find yourself after watching a "Super-Hero" flick that was good, BUT you found it lacking...too many unanswered questions?? Or a Superhero flick that felt like you were watching an hour and a half toy ad??....Well, get ready for something completely different! You will enjoy Hellboy...it is an Amusement Ride for your brain. A well thought out movie with very good character development, and on top of that excellent acting. The movie doesn't leave you lacking, the special effects are A+ and you don't have to wait 30 to 45 minutes into the movie before you ever see the main character. Anyway....Rent it, Buy it, Download it.....just take the time to see it. You won't regret it.
