American Girl: Discover Science

Cute and fun book , but this one is so similar to Doll STEM (see pictures). Discover Science is shown at the bottom of the pictures and Doll STEM at the top. I personally like Doll STEM best, as it includes supplies to make over 50 crafts . I bought both books for my 4 year old who’s advanced and loves science and space. I was thinking they would be different, but I feel I really only needed to purchase one. Doll STEM seems like a revised version of this book. My advice is to pay the extra few dollars, definitely worth it :)

The recommended ages for American Girl Discover Science is recommended formages 6-8. I truly love everything American Girl, but I found this to be hit or miss for the age group. Some of the experiments can be done with ease, almost too easy. "Sink or Float", "Backyard Bug Watch", etc. Most of these were already done in preschool. Then there is a section on food, taste, reaction and gluten. However, there is a fun addition for "Doll Size Science". You can make a safety vest by folding duct tape or make a mini solar system. Overall, it is a great book. I expected a book with an easy layout of science experiments and items needed. We found ourselves making lists and needing to go to the store for most items. A fun way to have your AG doll help!

My granddaughter loves American Dolls. Her local library has a lending program for American Dolls. Every week she can take out a new doll. The doll comes with comments from previous lenders, and they ask that the lenders keep a diary Of The fun things they did on a daily basis. This Discover Science Book will be a perfect addition to the dolls.There are 52 colorful chapters, all with ideas of science projects. Some of the projects are simple, others are more difficult. The chapters range from Learning to be a scientist, to Stargazing. In each chapter there is a discussion of the chapter topic the science project, and facts about the particular subject. My granddaughter picked Science on the menu. This chapter discussed nutrients and types of food and food for energy. There is a tongue test to see if different parts of the tongue could taste more. She looked at colors of food and tried to identify different types of yogurt with her eyes closed. And, then we discussed which foods are the best for breakfast. My granddaughter eats very healthy foods, so she aced this chapter. Tomorrow we will do Feel the Force. At the end is a Glossary Of terms used.This is a fun book for children and their adults. It is a lot of fun for several children to compete in this science discovery book.Recommended. prisrob 05-19-18

American Girl: Discover Science is an excellent book for young children. I would give this to kids approximately age 6-12. Maybe even a little younger if an adult is interested in providing help. This book looks at many common activities and interests from a science point of view. There are ideas for super simple science projects involving sports, baking, pets, fashion, gardening and more. For better or worse, computers and coding are not covered in this book. Projects all involve only commonly found materials and are generally non-messy. I think if I had seen science approached in this way, as part of things I already loved, I might have been more interested in it during my school years. This book has lots of pictures of American Girl Dolls to illustrate the activities. Information is divided into small bits and arranged well. A glossary is included. This is a great place for children to take a first look at science and how it affects their everyday life. More advanced science enthusiasts will probably want a greater challenge than what is suggested here.

This is a really nicely put together science experiment book for kids. Fans of American Girl will love it but other kids who aren't familiar with this brand will still find its clear photos and activities delightful.It teaches actual science concepts in a fun, engaging way. Some of the experiments could actually be used for participating in a science fair. Some of the topics covered in the book are How to be a Scientist, Sports Science, Feel the Force, Pet Power, Grow Your Garden, and Star Gazing. Our daughter finds the Fashion Sense and Kitchen Lab to be the best in the book.Most of the supplies are things you would find at home such as berries, lemon juice, vinegar, different fabrics, spray bottle, and clay. Some specialty items you need are styrofoam balls for planets, colored push pins, and craft wheels for a mini car.
