Does this have an actual water filter or just a water pump and where does the water come from is the cave full of water?

It is just a pump, we looked at a filter but with the design we did not feel it was necessary and were concerned with filter pads that did not get changed or cleaned and the issues. The bottom section comes apart allowing you to change out the water if necessary but we have found very little need in the two years we have had these operated with our reptile friends

if you have a screen on top of the tank how does it plug in?

If you have a Zilla Fresh Air Screen Habitat cover that sits down over the tank, the cords can go out thru the corner slits, or you can install a Zilla cord access port in the screen. Please call the Zilla Team at 888-255-4527 to discuss that option. If you have another brand that does not have cord slots, you can also install a cord access port. If you are using a Zilla Critter Cage with the slide-in screens, there are spring loaded cord slots on the back edge of the screen. The same with the front opening terrariums. Hope this helps!

Does this have running water? Where does the water run down to? Inside the cave?

The water is filtered through the tubing system and runs into the cave. The cave has holes at the bottom so the water is pretty much recycled over and over

What does it run on? Batteries? If so, what is the battery life like?

It has a transformer and cord that plug into standard 110 v US outlet
