Stories about sinister centipedes are legendary but behind the myths lie an important, valuable, and harmless group of invertebrate predators performing a vital service to ecosystems by helping to keep plant-eating pest populations in check. Orin McMonigle's Centipedes in Captivity details the five chilopod orders, highlighting the biggest and most beautiful species commonly kept in captivity. Those who want to learn more about these magnificent creatures, their toxicology, biology, and variety will find the accounts just as useful as those interested in containing, mating, and successfully reproducing the more spectacular centipedes in the laboratory, or at home. Review: Great book! - I am a Biologist and found the content of the book to be very good. Probably the best one for centipedes currently on the market but I would like to criticize the author's suggestion for the size of the terrarium. He states that they could be kept in small jars but that would be detrimental to the life span and quality of life of the centipedes since they are fast active hunters that can cover considerable distances, therefore they require more space than ambush predators like bird spiders or praying mantises. He often states that many of his centipedes had a short life span and always attributed their deaths to other causes without questioning whether that could be due to the fact that some were kept in tiny containers. I have always kept my centipedes in decent sized terrariums (3 times longer than the length of the animal in length and 1,5x times in width) and never had such problems of my animals dying within a short period of time.

The book fans of myriapods have been waiting for.
This is the definitive book on centipedes. In the past fans of the hobby have been restricted to internet resources or a short black and white pamphlet style book from the same author. But finally, we have a full color hardcover book for our hobby and anyone interested in keeping these amazing animals. At 222 pages with nice clear color pictures and individual care sheet like sections of many different species that are commonly kept in the pet trade this book is great. Also with updated or correct scientific names so someone who is a amatuer as myself can more easily order and ID centipedes from online or brick+mortar pet stores. I highly recommend this book to anyone keeping centipedes or thinking of getting one. The only complaint I have is I wish it came with a dust jacket.
