Hand guard is comfortable to hold and protects your hand
After nearly loosing a finger while trying to clean the basic blade in a high end food processor, I decided that I needed a slicer that would make it difficult for my hand to get cut. I liked the fact that this slicer is made of good quality stainless steel and when the slicer is opened out and on a counter top, it sits at a comfortable angle for slicing. It has a rubber gasket on the end that keeps the slicer from sliding around on the counter top while I work. The directions are simple to understand and I DO NOT have to undergo the terror of changing blades: just push in the outer ring on the blade selection knob and turn to get the desired slice size. Don't freak out because the slice sizes are listed in metric; just turn the knob and experiment and you will find the slice size you want. The hand guard has actual metal pins (not plastic spikes) that hold the food in place all the way to the last slice and it protects your hand. People with OCD might be disappointed because the last slice cut might not be the exact size as the previous slices. Just deal with it....it's a good slicer and worth the money.

Easy to use and clean
I bought this to replace an old mandolin slicer I had, which I use to make potato chips. I needed something which would slice potatoes paper-thin and this did the job quickly and easily. The dial allows for minor adjustments of thickness, in case you want some a little thicker. I've also used it to slice for french-fries, and it also does that quickly and nicely. Clean-up is easy with some soapy water and a spray nozzle, and it's ready to go back into the cupboard. It's common sense, but always remember how sharp this is and be careful when cleaning it.

Less strain than mandoline without the container's support...my arthritic hands are happy!
As I have gotten older, I have lost strength in my hands and arms due to arthritis in my hands and a damaged shoulder. A few years ago, I started replacing kitchen items that are too heavy or too difficult for me to use. I finally got the nerve up get a mandolin so I wouldn't have to slice and chop so much. The first mandolin I had required me to hold its weight with my left hand/arm, the one that doesn't have much strength. After using the other one, my arm ached terribly. Even using it resting on a bowl required my arm to stabilize it to prevent it moving. Because I like the results of a mandolin, I decided to try one with a stabile base/compartment. This has made such a difference! My left arm/hand are not strained as before and I enjoy how quickly and neatly this slices, shreds, etc. Having the bottom container keeps food from going all over the kitchen and its non-slip pads grip the counter, relieving the need to hold it as tightly as the other one. The only problem is sometimes the inserted blade part detaches while I am using it. Fortunately, I have been lucky so far and had no injuries. I pay a lot of attention to what I am doing while using this, as anyone should with such sharp blades. The quality of the materials used is great. It is sturdy, easily cleaned (use a dish-brush on the blades), and easy to use. The "instructions" weren't very helpful due to the very, very tiny printing, but I had little trouble using it the first time. This speeds up my prep time and the reduced strain makes cooking easier. Overall, a great solution!

Simple, elegant, reliable, and very reliable
In manufacturing jargon, such a tool as this one is known as a "jig". I originally needed it for thin slicing potatoes and yams before air baking them. I have since discovered another great use for it: fine julienning of jicama before marinating. It performs both tasks equally well. There are two reasons why I chose this model. This design is longer, providing for greater momentum before the blade(s), while also providing for greater deceleration distance after the blade. Otherwise, one would have difficulty getting through tough/hard stuff, especially if it's wide. Moreover, with those pieces a shorter design would be more prone to overshoot, i.e. your forward stroke halting well off the jig and onto the counter top. This model also has an all-metal deck; two less parts of the assembly that could otherwise become broken if the jig falls onto hard flooring. Happily, this robust construction does not result in a perceptively heavy overall weight. There are two julienne settings; fine and coarse. My only difficulty has been with the latter. Note that a wider strip of julienne is also a deeper strip, and that greater depth markedly increases the resistance to the stroke. Fortunately, I don't need coarse juliennes. So if you desire to make deep fried potatoes ( "French fries" ), I would not recommend this tool. Needless to say, a shorter length design would be even worse for that use. You would need a longer length jig than this one in order to develop enough momentum while providing enough distance for deceleration. The handle works quite well for gripping pieces that are not taller than about 2". Pieces taller than that should instead be held onto with a stainless steel mesh glove. Then, once the piece is reduced to 2", use the handle, so as not to damage the glove. I've already damaged the handle via slicing set at 4mm. A raised lip of its molding can impact against the jig's blade uness you hold the handle such that its plane is perfectly parallel to the jig's deck. But of course that's quite impossible. So time will tell how long before I must replace the handle. I find that I can get away with a simple rinse-off with hot spray water, washing it with dish detergent no more frequently than about every 4th use.

Well made for the price.
I've only used this item once so far, but it was easy slicing, easy clean up. I love the fact that it has a dial to adjust the thickness of the slice. It has two julienne settings as well; for regular cut fries and also for more finer cuts for vegetables like carrots and the like. The safety handle assures no accidents as it grips into what ever you are slicing. It is very sturdy and well made. I couldn't have chosen a better product for my kitchen.

Blade is starting to rust less then a month in
This is petty no frills mandolin, very sharp, easy to clean, pretty sturdy. However, I noticed that my blade has a small rust spot on the far edge. I’ve only had this for a month so I hope I’m mistaken. It would be a waste of money as it won’t be useable if rusted. Will update.

Hasta ahora a salido muy buena. Corta bien y me gusta que hay las dos diferentes opciones de corte, rebanadas y juliana. Se puede meter a la lavavajilla lo cual facilita la limpieza.
