Solid metal is the way to go!!
I had a plastic phone mount that came with my Joby Gorillapod, but my new iPhone 6 Plus doesn't fit, so I needed something different. When I stumbled upon this metal one, I was very excited to try it out. One of my fears with the plastic mount was that it felt delicate - like it wanted to break at the most inopportune time. That fear is no more with this beautifully machined aluminum mount. Sure, it's bigger and heavier than the plastic one (which even folded flat), but this metal one is tough to beat. In today's world where cheap plastic is abundant, it's nice to see a product with good, solid, quality, metal construction. I also like that rather than having a spring, which can wear out, this mount employs a simple thumb-screw to adjust the size and lock the mount onto the phone. There's virtually nothing to wear out with this and I have no doubt that it will provide years of reliable service. This "XL" version fits my iPhone 6 Plus with room to spare. The "jaws" open extra wide to accommodate almost any behemoth phone you might have - up to 3.6 inches. For smaller phones, like the iPhone 4 or 5, there's a "regular" version.. The rubber pads protect your phone from damage while in this mount (just don't go nuts torquing the thumbscrew too much - it's not necessary for a secure hold). Best of all, the standard tripod thread means you can put your phone on top of virtually any tripod of your choosing. There is really nothing not to like. This RetiCAM mount is perfect and I'm thinking about buying another one just to have on hand in case I misplace or lose this one.

Rock solid
This thing is made of two pieces of machined metal, not flimsy plastic, so it's got a good build quality to it. Little rubber pieces inside the jaws will keep it from scraping your phone. The most appealing thing to me is that this is one-size-fits-most all. I'm not sure about the huge phablets, but it holds my iPhone 5s with case easily, and it's nice to know that if I ever switch cases or move to a different phone, I won't have to upgrade again. And it feels like it will last a while and not break the first time it's dropped. The only minor downside is that with a thumbscrew closure, it takes more time than a clamp-style thing to open and close it. But, it also holds the phone securely, so that's an issue I can live with.

Used on a Motorcycle to hold my phone, PERFECT!!!!!!!
Ok, so here we go. I don't really know why this product exists. That is to say what it's real purpose is( just kidding). I however do use it to hold my cell phone, as it was intended just mine hold my phone at 70+ MPH as I fly down the interstate. Let me tell you it does that job perfectly. I was looking for a cell phone holder that I felt I could trust while on my motorcycle, and this was it. I have hit potholes, rough roads, short stops, and crazy traffic and this thing holds on like its life depended on it. Truth is, it does. This clamp is made of metal and is sturdy as can be. I have thought about buying more for other accessories however I have run out of handlebar space. Seriously though, I ride my motorcycle everyday and this was the perfect long term solution that I could trust. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. UPDATE: Thought I would add what else I used to make this work on my Motorcycle in case anyone else out there is trying to do the same. The handlebar clamp I used is at the following link. Golitonยฎ Articulating Magic Friction Arm Large Super Clamp Crab Pliers Clip w/ Stud Adapter 1/4" and 3/8" Included for camera DSRL -Black http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G6BBORK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Work Great and holds strong. This item is listed as no longer available however I am sure you could find it elsewhere if you were inclined to look. The Adapter I used is here. SMALLRIG ยฎ 1/4" Male to 1/4" Male Threaded Screw Adapter (2-pack) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007LTH1X2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 These are not centered correctly however that is what happens with threaded items. Just go to your local hardware store and pick up a couple of plastic washers and add them in until you get it positioned right where you want it. Hope this helps some of you out there, Good Luck.

Quality made, works as advertised
This little tripod mount works exactly as advertised, and lets me use my phone (with Moment case and lenses) on standard 1/4"-20 tripods like big DSLR tripods or the GorillaPod. It feels well-made and sturdy, much more so than spring-loaded mounts that squeeze the phoneโthis one screws down to the exact amount of pressure you want, making me a LOT more confident that the phone with the relatively heavy lenses won't be going anywhere. The adjustable size also means it works with relatively small phones all the way up to our gigantic oversized phablets of 2019. If I had one critique, it's that the wrap-around ends on the screen side come down a little far, especially for modern phones with slim side bezels; the result it it blocks a tiny amount of the display. Not a big deal when you're doing mostly hands-off photography or filming, but it can occasionally get in the way of some camera controls, depending on your phone and its software.

Great with slight modification
This mount is probably the best of the crop -- I guess you get what you pay for. I like the design and the very secure way the clamp grips my iPhone 6 in Luvvitt Ultra Armor case (another winner by the way). The only thing I'm not sold on was the decision to use plastic slider rods on either side of the adjustment screw. The rods are pretty flexible and allow the whole clamp to slightly deflect and bow out from top to bottom (see others' attached images). I solved this problem a trip to my local Ace -- I opted to replace the plastic pins with slightly longer 3/16" dia. clovis pins cut down to about 2.5" in length. Even though my digital caliper measured the both sets of pins at 3/16", there was just a slight bit of play when using the new stainless pins. A tiny wrap of clear tape on the new pins made them fit snugly, but loose enough to slide. In retrospect, I should have take the mount the hardware store with me. There is a lot of variance in the finished size of the clovis pins; I'm sure I could have found a pair that fit more snugly -- another 1/32" would have been perfect.

Expected "just enough"--got the whole smash
After nearly 20 years of purchasing accessories for various handheld devices, I've become skeptical. I'm happy when the product doesn't fall apart in my hands, and lasts more than a week. The RetiCAM Smartphone Tripod Mount does not belong in the same class as most accessories. If anything, the manufacturer's description is modest. The only thermoplastic resin you'll find in this mount caps the steel adjustment bolt, and even that knurled knob is so tough you'll think it's metal. The main body consists of a pair of vise jaws CNC-machined from solid aluminum. As with a bench vise, the jaws slide on a pair of rails, and are adjusted by a steel bolt. (These rails might also be plastic, but it's difficult to know for sure. They are certainly very strong.) The jaws are V-notched and lined with rubber pads. The aluminum and steel are black-anodized, and the logo appears to be laser-etched rather than silk-screened. I was concerned about mounting my shiny iPhone 6 to a tripod using this type of mount, but I need not have worried. I did not have to remove it from its case, and thanks to the rubber pads the jaws will hold the device firmly without needing excessive pressure. Unless your device has edges that are completely lined with buttons, you won't have any trouble with obstructed controls. This mount is the "Real Deal." Mount your most precious device with it, and your anxieties will melt away. It gets my highest recommendation.

Hands down the best smartphone mount on the market!
After upgrading to the iPhone 6 my old smartphone mount was to small so I decided to try out a few options to replace it. The RetiCAM Smartphone Tripod Mount was the first and only one that I ended up testing. Most smartphone mounts you see have some similarities; they are usually made out of plastic, feel very flimsy, and use a spring based retention system that is very flawed. The RetiCAM Smartphone Mount is night and day better; it is made out of metal, it has nice rubber padding on contact areas which protects the phone from scratches and helps keep the phone from sliding, and it uses a screw to lock your iPhone in place which makes me feel confident that my iPhone will not fall out and break. For my purposes I attach this mount to a tripod hot shoe adapter which allows me to mount my smartphone on top of professional camera using a hot shoe mount. This works phenomenal to allow you to get two camera angles without worrying about it. It is also useful for redundancy, a wide angle shot, or to shoot behind the scene content. I have also used this mount along on a tripod to take family photos and it performed excellent. I paid full price for this product.

Just when you though it was Safe to go back into the Water..
This thing is heavy duty. It's anodized or heavily painted metal.. feels heavier than aluminum. The center rod is a very long Thumb screw that unscrews to let the two pieces part and let your phone slid in sideways.. forget about opening the jaws wide enough to shove your phone into the jaws of death frontways. The overhanging "lips" are just too deep to do that. I have a Nexus 5 with a Great Shield bumper case. It "mouthed" it all.. but I had to open wide.. and shove it in from the side. The "lips" or "teeth" of the jaws come down and have a "V" shaped groove along their length. They are lined with a soft "rubber" material to cushion the impact of the jaws clamping down. The two "side" rods in the pic are just loose plastic "guides" for keeping the upper and lower mandible aligned and offer no real support.. they don't rattle much though. The Thumb screw draws the two pieces together and provide the real motive force. There is like a soft rubber ring or something that adds friction to the underside of the Thumbscrew that keeps it from vibrating apart and unscrewing itself. When this thing has your phone.. it feels "solid".. it feels "very heavy".. you will not be holding this up to take pictures without a tripod. It's just too darned heavy. As for using it like a "stand" for viewing things.. it can do that, but only resting on it backside or the tripod 1/4-20 hole in the bottom perpendicular at a 90 degree angle. No slanted angles possible.. the jaws want to grab your phone and hold it only at a 90 degree angle. Its very useful and handy.. but its also not for the 90 pound weakling.. this thing is a serious "gripper"..

Great for any size smartphones.
Stuck my iPhone 6 Plus on my car's windshield with a suction cup mount and the RetiCam and took a fabulous video that I posted to YouTube and my car club's website. See it at http://www.gvma.org/videos.html. Terrific product!
