It gave me a refresher course on how to use the abacus I bought for my son. It offers easy to use instructions, it's like riding a bike.

This are really instructions on how to use Japanese abacus techniques on the Chinese abacus. He instructs us to ignore the top and bottom rows of beads which are precisely what distinguishes the Chinese abacus from the Japanese abacus. He also makes references to dots on reckoning bar... I have never seen this dots on the Chinese abacus, only on the Japanese. The quality of the printed page in this book is better than any other abacus book I've seen but the title should have been "How to use the Japanese abacus"

Easily the best book on how to use the Chinese abacus. Nice graphics throughout.

Previously to working through this book, I had no knowledge of or experience with the abacus. I worked through the book over the course of a week and gained enough confidence to do basic operations on the abacus (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). The advanced functions such as square and cube root receive great coverage as well, but simply do not interest me. I enjoy using the abacus and truly appreciate the gentle introduction this book gives. I think this book would be fine for adults and children alike. -- Reader Note: Because I was ignorant of the differences between the Chinese and Japanese abacus, I put off studying either method as I didn't know how significant the differences might be. The differences are negligible and skills developed studying either the Chinese or Japanese abacus are immediately transferable between the two different styles. Thus this book serves as a fine introduction to either style. A note to fellow Computer Scientists: So what are the extra beads on the chinese abacus all about? They can be used to performed calculations natively in hexadecimal. Though math in base 16 is not covered in this text directly, the skills you learn working through the book in base 10 are immediately transferable to base 16.
