Great for cracking grain, NOT grinding flour
Great for cracking wheat for cereal or feed. This does NOT make flour and it doesn't say it does. I suspect it would also crack corn as well. But this quickly does a great job at what it is good for. Easy to set up and easy to use.

A great and reliable tool!
I'm confused by some of the negative reviews of this grinder. Perhaps because of them, I really took my time in setting this thing up. I takes a little attention to set the coarseness of the grind up just right. But once set, it works great! I'm thrilled with it. It's not like a blender that you can just plug in and use. It does take a little time to get use to. But if you expect that and give it the time it's a wonderful and reliable tool! Its cast-iron construction is solid and should hold up for years. Be careful when grinding not to tighten the plates too close together. I'm guessing that's why some have mentioned getting metal in their flour. I listen for metal on metal grinding. If I hear it, I stop and adjust the grinding plates further apart. I've had no problems with it. It does not produce a fine grind. I does great at producing a coarse (cornmeal type grind). I bought it for grinding acorns and on them, it works great! Again, maybe takes some time to figure out the proper set up. But, It works well and is well built. I'm quite please with this purchase.

A bit of a workout but it gets the job done
I bought this to crack corn for my yard birds, especially my cardinals, they love cracked corn. Corn kernels are very hard and they were taking a toll on my Nutri Bullet. It arrived on time. It is cast iron so it's pretty heavy. The separate pieces don't fit well in the box as you can see from the photo, however, it did arrive in an additional bigger box. The pieces have a shiny coating, which I fully expect to chip off with use. This one already had a couple chipped areas upon arrival. I really don't mind because I prefer the cast iron rustic look anyway but I will run a bag or two of dry beans through initially to encourage that coating to wear down. I don't want to feed the coating to my birds. The instructions are clear and assembly was easy, took about 15 minutes. You will need a place to mount it to the edge of a table, counter, or work bench so keep that in mind, it is not free standing. Once assembled, I gave it a whirl. I had to use some elbow grease to get the handle all the way around. Mostly I ended up rocking it back and forth to grind, which wasn't a surprise to me because I have ground corn before. It is a bit of a work out but I'm a country girl and I don't mind the effort. The task should become easier with use and oiling. If you aren't into elbow grease, spend the extra money and purchase an electric one. This is not going to give you a fine mill, like flour, it's not designed for that. But it will crack course grains. Being cast iron, it will be susceptible to rust so I know it will require cleaning and oiling. The directions are very clear about that. I gave it an overall 4 because of the 1) chipped areas, 2) the coating (I would have preferred just plain ole cast iron but couldn't find one like that) and 3) the packaging it didn't fit in. It does deserve a 5 in one area though...it cracks corn to the perfect consistency I need for my cardinals. Overall, I am very happy with it so far. I will update if that changes.

Great Grinder for grains
I use this to grind fresh grains for my chickens, corn, sorghum, mesquite pods, and other seeds, I have it set for a finer chunk which the birds like. It will make some flour while grinding, and I'm sure I'd could keep processing it down to a finer and finer flour, yet at that point I would take the flour I had made, and use a food processer for a even finer flour. Yet it does what I need it for just fine, it's well made, and is Made in Mexico, the wooden handle is a nice touch, and as long as it's inside should last for years. The finish has a bright galvanized look, and it would appear that it will last generations of heavy use. It's not a lightweight unit, and the hardware could use a locking washer near the grinding plates, however I'm sure if you used them they would mar the finish, and it would take a wrench to loosed the nuts off. I just use my big strong hands to tighten the butterfly nuts, and I almost never have to readjust the settings. Well worth the money on this unit, some of the other ones on Amazon look like toy's, this is a unit that could be found at a local Taco Street Vendor in South America who is making fresh food with whole corn/maize.

Produces a fine grind of nixtamalized corn into masa fina for tortillas
This little inexpensive hand Molino produced about as fine as possible at home masa. Masienda has an electric Molino for around $2000..and while tempting, I do not make enough masa to justify buying one. I have used my meat grinder and food processor and have gotten good results. But honestly, using this little grinder gave me a nice smooth masa to make masa fina for tortillas. I added water after grinding my nixtamal, balled up for pressing and turned out some very nice pliable tortillas. I buy Masienda corn and am very happy to have the flavor of Mexico in my kitchen. this is old school cooking. Using some arm strength and a little time and planning you can get a delicious nutritious corn tortilla.

Solid manual grinder for Mexican tortillas.
Knowing you’re getting a very much manual grinder here i rate this high. I can grind nixtamalized corn in this much faster than using a metate. That being said it needs a second pass for Mexican tortillas. I’ve made a few pounds of top notch tortillas from several varieties of maiz. Probably takes me about an hour to process a lb of maiz taking my time.

A mix of poor quality and poor fit to my needs
Quality: There were small amounts of rust on the screw threads. Not terrible; I cleaned and greased it. The hopper is also a very poor fit to the main body. There are gaps large enough for flax seeds to fall through. Not so easy to fix. The auger that feeds the grain to the grind head is a poor fit to the main casting. The gap between the outside of the auger threads and the main casting is so large that about a tablespoon of flax seeds don't get fed to the grinding plates. Doesn't do what I need it to: I want to crack flax seeds. Too fine and it will make my bread mushy. Kept whole, they won't be digested. I adjusted the grinder to the maximum coarseness that still cracks every flax seed. At that setting the flax seeds come out with an order of magnitude difference in size between the smallest and largest pieces. That seems extreme and has much too many small pieces for my need. The other option is to adjust the coarseness so that about 20% of the flax seeds come out still whole. But then I have to grind it three times over to get to an acceptable amount of whole seeds. :-/ Would have been nice to have: It would have been nice if the crank shaft was small enough to fit an electric drill to. Would make the work go much faster. I might be able to find a bolt to thread in the end that has a head the right size for a drill chuck.

Amazing soybean splitter/de-huller!
I am using this on almost the largest setting to split soybeans (which dehulls them) for making tempeh and soy milk. It works great. I can't see it ever breaking. So I'd say worth the price, since I'll own it forever. Although if you use it with wet ingredients you might have to be more careful about rust when washing it. I haven't washed mine since I use it only for dried soy beans.
