The Annotated Emma

David Shapard does not disappoint- once again! I own all his annotated versions of Austen. Great detailed information, and a fantastic way for a real Austen enthusiast to re-read the books with a fresh perspective. Cant recommend enough!

Love these annotated versions! So informative and helpful! I’m actually one who has read all Austen’s books numerous times and know a lot about the history, but I learned a lot and understood much better. Kudos to the editor and publisher for enriching my life with these editions. I have also been sending as gifts to all my Janite friends. Even the former English majors are thrilled. Just the thing for anyone who loves to increase their knowledge all their lifelong.

I love Jane Austen. But these annotated versions double my understanding of nearly every conversation! I recommend reading not just this one but all 5 annotated versions.

I thought I was pretty familiar with the historical period, but I learned new things from the annotations. I also appreciated the annotations on Jane Austin herself. I particularly enjoyed the reports by her family members on what Jane said happened to some of the characters later after the book was over. I wouldn't mind if the text were printed a bit bigger next time. I understand the paperback is already quite hefty, but I was getting eyestrain after reading for a while.

This book is my dad’s favorite Jane Austen. He’s read it several times and he felt like this really improved the experience. He definitely recommends it to Emma fans.

For these versions, each spread has the actual novel on the left side, and the corresponding annotations on the right side, guided by superscripts. These annotations are very comprehensive and provide historical context on not only the story, but also the author (including references to her other works and letters) which allows me to read this book with more understanding. It is interesting to learn about the culture and customs of the time and how they contribute to the characterizations in the story.

As a collector of JA editions, I bought all of these annotated JA novels. I am very pleased except for one MAJOR flaw. The spine title is oriented differently on Emma from all the others. This really stands out on the shelf. Why would any publisher do this? I am thinking about making a cover for this one.

Ce livre s'adresse essentiellement aux anglophones qui veulent affiner et approfondir leur compréhension du roman, car il donne plein de renseignements et d'explications au fil du texte, sur le contexte historique, le sens de tel ou tel mot (qui a changé depuis), des éléments d'analyse littéraire (sur la construction, les personnages, le style). Et, ce qui ne gâte rien, il est abondamment illustré de reproductions (en noir et blanc) de tableaux, de gravures et dessins dont beaucoup datent de la période concernée, les années 1813-1815.

zu Austens Werk: Emma wird im Allgemeinen als Austens bestes Werk gesehen. Es ist auch das längste. Die Titelfigur hat aufgrund ihrer höheren gesellschaftlichen Stellung (im Vergleich zu den anderen Austen-Hauptfiguren) viel mehr Freiheiten, aber es zeigt sich, dass auch das damals nicht so viele sind (zB war sie nie am Meer, obwohl sie reich ist, es nicht weit ist und gerne hin möchte). wiki schreibt "an intelligent young woman with too little to do and no ability to change her location or everyday routine" Emma ist ein Entwicklungsroman:Die Hauptfigur bessert sich im Verlauf moralisch. Daher ist Emma wohl auch die differenzierteste, komplexeste, vielschichtigste (odgl) Austen-Heldin. Es geht in dem Buch noch viel mehr um Klasse als sonst - zwar verkehren sonst die Austen-Charaktere selbstverständlich auch nur mit ihresgleichen (also innerhalb der landed gentry), aber das ist kaum Thema. Hier aber geht's sehr viel darum, wen darf man (nicht) heiraten, weil die eben über einem bzw unter einem sind. Dieser Effekt wird durch die Kommentierung verstärkt, weil der Kommentator dann eben auch schreibt "Aus der Anrede erkennt man schon, wer welchen Rang hat". Die (kontemporären) Kritiken bemängel(te)n, dass in dem Buch vergleichsweise wenig passiert. Im Vergleich zu anderen Austen-Büchern passiert meiner Meinung aber auch nicht (viel) weniger. zur Kommentierung: Shapard ist Historiker. Der Text ist auf der linken Seite gedruckt, auf der rechten ist jeweils die Kommentierung. Teilweise gibt es auch kontemporäre Bilder. Es ist etwas "überkommentiert" dahingehend, dass er oft die Bedeutung von Worten erklärt, die im Zusammenhang eindeutig sind. Gelegentlich gibt es Querverweise auf andere Austen-Werke, ihre Biographie oder Briefe. Stellenweise hätte ich mir mehr literaturwissenschaftliche Kommentierung gewünscht, auch wenn der Kommentar diesbezüglich einiges enthält. Die historische Komentierung hält sich im Rahmen, ist aber an manchen Passagen für das Verständnis aus heutiger Sicht essentiell. Resümee: Wer Austen mag, kommt nicht umhin, ihre Werke im Original und kommentiert zu lesen. Zu diesem Zweck ist dieses Buch jedenfalls sehr zu empfehlen. Gerade aber wegen der Kommentierung ist es auch sehr geeignet um einen guten Einstieg in das Werk Austens zu geben.

A Febbraio 2016 sarà disponibile il sesto, Mansfield Park, in edizione Kindle. Forse per l'Estate 2016 sarà stampato il relativo cartaceo di Mansfield Park. Sense and sensibility potrebbe iniziare a scarseggiare in cartaceo, ma probabilmente è in preparazione una seconda edizione. La copertina è flessibile e la lingua è solo inglese.
