Substance use is very common among psychiatric patients. Depending on your practice, up to 50% of your patients suffer from an addiction that may be aggravating their primary symptoms. It is impractical to refer all such patients to addiction specialists, who are in short supply. This extremely practical guide will enhance your confidence in treating all substance use disorders. There are 14 brief chapters covering everything you need to know in order to evaluate the severity of substance use and to decide on the best treatments for your patients. You'll find detailed instruction on how to frame your questions about this sensitive topic, how to order drug screens, how 12 step programs work, and how to prescribe medications that will help your patients recover. There are also many useful tips and pearls, along with user-friendly comparison charts to make on-the-spot decision making easier. Review: This book has it all. - Dr. Weaver is an exceptional educator. He has written countless articles in different journals. This book makes easy to understand addiction, diagnose substance use disorder, and understand treatment modalities. I love the part on drug testing and contents in that chapter are beyond words. I recommend this book to every clinical provider who is prescribing controlled medications and/or treating substance use disorder. I practice addiction psychiatry and I learned a lot during my addiction psychiatry fellowship but this book has taught me more. More practical aspects of clinical practice. This book is not just about medications for detoxification or maintenance treatment, it explains in details about different psychotherapy modalities as well. I highly recommend this book for everyone who is interested in learning more about addiction treatment. Review: The info you need - for the clinician in the trenches - Excellent! This book is the one you need, if you're looking for practical advice, from an authoritative source: tables, drug loading doses, etc. Fast information finding, no bloat. For the clinician in the trenches. For primary care clinicians and the outpatient setting, it not only helps, it helps a lot!

Lacking Depth
I typically love Carlat books. I was disappointed by this one as it lacked detail or more depth into the subject. There was no information on stimulant dependency other than contingency management. There was limited buprenorphine information, particularly missing insight on at-home inductions or dosing recommendations. It was a bit wordy and less of a reference. Additionally, an update is needed given that this is now 6 years old.
