My original side shot motor and fan assembly started making a loud howling sound and needed replacing. It had served me problem free for 22 years so not sure why some of these reviews call it junk. A good many of those years it ventilated a furnace that serviced a family of 6 with hot water and heat, so it got some heavy use. We are empty nesters now. I had an HVAC contractor quote me in the range of $1200 - $1500 to replace it. Seemed a bit steep to me so I went to my trusty friend amazon.com and found this replacement. It took about a half hour to install and works like a charm. Install was a piece of cake and I saved $1000. Amazon has saved me thousands of dollars on do it yourself tasks because it seems there is nothing you can't find here. I thought for sure I would have a tough time finding a replacement part for this 22 year old power ventilator. Amazon is awesome.

Needed to rebuild my ss1 side shot and the motor with fan was just what I needed. Saved a lot of money not having to buy a new side shot.

I only needed the tuna can with the vertical slits in it. As nobody sold anything that would fit the perfectly good motor that I already had bolted to my vent I had to order the whole thing. I couldn't order through Amazon.ca so I paid the import duty on top of the hefty shipping charge. After delivery and duty it came to just shy of C$600.. It took about 20 minutes to switch out, a few nuts and two spade connectors, and it works. It's just slightly louder than a canteen's worth of cutlery working it's way through a MiG jet intake, which is a marked improvement on the one it replaced so that's something.. Another reviewer remarked on the futility of buying just the impeller head as it would be near impossible to balance it when fitting it to an existing motor. This should not be a concern, the motor impeller assembly as supplied is perfectly balanced by the head of clown car wheel installation. You could not possibly make a worse job. All is not lost though. Due to the flimsy construction of the head it will warp and balance itself soon enough. All in all an expensive, ultimately noisy but painless process.. It did turn up two days early though.. EDIT: Just looked and the impeller head is available at the moment, do yourself a favour and don't waste your money on the whole thing, get the impeller alone and fit it. You couldn't do a worse job than the factory does...

The SS1 assembly was a perfect replacement fit for the bolt-ups and the two wires. Replacement took about 15 minutes. Very quite unit. I couldn't tell it was running until I put my hand on the motor to feel it spinning. My old unit was 18 years old and got very noisy. It rattled 1/2 of the house. I am extremely satisfied with the new unit after one month of operation. I hope it last!

It's a good product, but it can and should be improved upon. Make it sturdier the wheel assembly part.

I have the SS1 venting unit on my boiler, rather than a chimney. This was the situation when I purchased my house in 2003. Since then, I have replaced the motor with wheel at least five times. Soot builds up on the wheel and affects its balance. Once it is out of balance the entire unit vibrates. The noise is unbearable. If not replaced, the entire SS1 breaks down. It does little good to try to clean the wheel or replace just the wheel. Once it is out of balance, it can't be balanced. It's a great deal for this company (Tjernlund). You're stuck replacing the motor and wheel on a regular basis at $250. I should have installed a chimney years ago.
