Budding geologists will love it
I couldn't imagine most kids getting all that excited about a box of rocks, but my 8-year-old daughter is totally fascinated by geology and she just about lost her mind when she opened these on Christmas morning. I'm no geologist, but the samples seemed pretty high quality, sure a lot of them just look like driveway gravel at first, but on closer inspection, there's quite a variety and they're a great reference to compare to other rocks you may find in nature. (I'm saying "rocks" but also fossils and minerals, of course) The booklets are pretty light on info and I wish the stickers were color-coded to the boxes and, well, stickier, you'll probably need to be careful about not mixing the samples up, especially between boxes, but even my daughter is like "DUH, dad, that one's IGNEOUS, it goes in here," so what do I know, ha. I'd recommend a geology book or two and a cheap jeweler's loupe to really get the most out of these.

Educational Insights
I was skeptical about giving these as a birthday gift for a 9 yr-old. I already had a microscope. He loved it and has spent several days looking at specimens under the microscope.

Missing rocks, wrong rocks, way over priced for what you get
Who on earth put these kits together!!! Some are missing pieces. Some have the wrong prices. And some have almost all of the same pieces. This could have been such a great educational supplement with rocks organized and labeled for identification. But instead, you’ll get boxes of mixed up rocks you can’t tell what’s what, or you’ll be missing some all together, or it will only have a few samples repeated in the same box. Get it together educational insight!! What a mess and such a waste of money! I’ll be returning and hopefully others see this warning!!

Good product.
The rocks and minerals are so much smaller than they're pictured. When we opened the Mineral Collection the Vermiculite was so small and broken into two pieces. It looked as if it had chipped off another rock. In the Fossil Collection we received a fourth of a Gastropod. Other than those two things, they are a nice educational tool to have on hand.

Geology Rocks!
My students love exploring some of Earth's little treasures. This set has everything you need to geology. I use them when reading Las rocas (Rocks) by Natalie M. Rosinsky. I believe it helps kids learn more difficult concepts when they can use hands-on objects.

I was a little apprehensive reading the reviews that the stones are really small and not all the packets had arrived. However the stones turned out to be quite a good size. And in fact they are the size as shown in the picture where they are spread from the boxes. Quite big enough for examination. And they did arrive quickly with all the stones as shown. So me and my girl are very exited and cannot wait for tomorrows homeschool lesson. We have allready purchased National Geographics 200+ Rock and mineral set but for learning purposes that is lacking. For geology one needs spesimens of more common stones too. And as it happens we live in a place where we cannot for example find limestone in nature and the igneous rocks too are quite impossible to find. So this is an excellent set and I would recommend it to anyone with a real interest in geology. In fact studying basic geology is a lot harder without a set like this one. It was expensive for us but still worth it. I consider us lucky to be anle to buy something like this.

I ignored a lot of the poor reviews on this product because I thought it would be great to home educate my children. Sadly the sets contain poor quality specimens and while I did not expect the rocks to exactly match the pictures I did not expect them to be so hard to identify, some rocks did not match colours and were tiny compared to images on front of box. Really disappointing product and it could have been so good had they picked better quality samples.
