A must for off-roading. High quality and reliability for the road rarely travelled.
As someone getting into off-roading, having a air pump is a must after airing down and hitting the trails. After extensive research and reading Amazon reviews, we chose this one. It has worked flawlessly so far and I feel great about the build quality, especially since there is a warranty. When using, it does get a bit hot so don't touch the hose to the body while in use. Otherwise I expect this pump to bring us happiness after off-roading for years to come.

Moves a lot of air with ease
I first purchased a Viair 88P from amazon. When I received it the unit did not work properly out of the box. I immediately returned it to Amazon because of a factory defect and decided to order the 400P model because of its greater capacity to move air. I tested it on a SR225-75 large travel trailer tire as soon as I received the unit and was pleased with the results. It inflated the tire to 55psi in about 3 minutes. The cylinder was warm but not hot to the touch. The unit is larger and heavier than the 88P but was worth it because of its much greater capacity to get the job done. It comes with a cloth case that is adequate but not what you would consider heavy duty. It does keep all of the components in one place when needed. The size of the 400P in its case is to large to place under most passenger car seats but could be stored in the trunk or pickup truck tool box. If the components were separated without the case, they might fit under some passenger car seats. The removable air hose is coiled and compact and easily stretched out from the front of my 38' RV to the rear tires. Since it is equipped with an industrial type hose quick connector other hoses or extensions could be added but would probably not ever be needed. I would purchase this unit again and would highly recommend it to others along with a quick external tire puncture repair kit particularly if you drive long distances in rural areas.

You Get What You Pay For With VIAIR
So a few years back I purchased an off brand of small portable air compressor. It lasted a while. A trip to the desert, a year of airing up a 300 dollar tire that couldn't be patched because name brand tire dealer doesn't know what a large patch is, and it ran like that for some time. On a recent trip to the beach, in 70 degree weather it crapped out. Smoked. Burned to a cinder and didn't blow the fuse? I bit the bullet. Purchased the 400P. Night and Day difference. Air up is less than half the time. Heat, while any compressor will generate it, is managed well with the duty cycle. QUIET! The el-cheapo was louder than the vehicle, running, and I have a chopped exhaust with a shorty. Accessories... well I don't plan on using it for balls or a mattress. But they are free. Cord, not a fan of the coils, but you have to make a sacrifice for compact storage. Plenty of length for a full size truck. Cool air down feature for the perfectionist. I like it. I also have another tool for this, but it's an option. The gauge is close. About 2 pounds low. It isn't NASCAR or a spaceship. It will get me home. The bag. Time will tell. It works for carrying everything and keeping it in one place. Zippers and snaps will probably go, but it will be a while. Bag is lined. Probably rain resistant. As long as I don't submerge the snorkel it should be ok. Overall, very impressed with how small, fast, powerful, and put together the unit is. Has some weight. This one is a keeper, and cost is decent enough to put 1 in each vehicle.

This is a quality product...it was just not suited for my needs.
Short version.... I bought this to use with my 31 ft. Class C motorhome and found that it really was not suitable for that application. The air line is too short and the type of chuck (locking and non-interchangeable) does not work well for dually tires. For cars, trucks, SUVs and other vehicles, this product should work well. I want to be clear that my bad experience with the product was the result of my choosing the wrong product and then trying to force it to do what it isn't suited to do. Long version... Bought this in an attempt to go cheaper than the 400P Auto RV version. When I aired up my front tire, it worked like a charm. It got the tire from 70 to 80 psi in less than a minute. However, when I tried to air up an inside dually tire, things went very wrong. With the locking chuck, the only way you'll get to the inside dually is with an air stem extension..which I had. Although the coiled line is listed as 30 ft, you really can't get anywhere near that distance because of the coiling. I had to pull it a little tight to get it to the rear tires. I clamped the chuck on the stem extension and let go of it to go turn the unit on. When I got back to the rear tire, I could hear air leaking. When I grabbed the line and chuck to disconnect it, the stem extension pulled free of the tire and the tire deflated. So, basically, the tension of the coiled line was enough to break off the tire stem. Great, I pulled the inside dually off and headed to Pep Boys to get the tire repaired. While I was there, I figured I'd just buy a longer non-coiled air line and a different chuck and make that work. That also did not end well. Attempting to air up the rear tire again (and teach my son how to do it at the same time) I let the compressor run too long. It became (predictably) very hot. The heat caused my brand new air line to fail at the compressor end...POP!. Lessons learned: Coiled lines are fine, as long as you have plenty of length to service your vehicle. Otherwise, they're gonna cause stress on your valve stems if they are clipped or screwed on. Duty cycles of air compressors should never be exceeded (duh!) and an automatic compressor that only runs when air is actually flowing will go a long way to keeping the compressor from overheating. If you have a long vehicle, or one with dually tires, step up and buy the more suitable version of this product. The Viair 40047 400P-RV Automatic. Final tally? No loss on the compressor because I've exchanged it with amazon and my new 4009_RV Automatic version is on the way. I lost a couple of hours of work in the Arizona sun changing the dually, the cost of chucks and connectors I bought for my failed work around and $20 to have the tire repaired. I did get my money back on the air line, though I would not have blamed them for not refunding that to me. Basically, I'm out $50 and hours of work because I tried to save $100...that I'm gonna end up spending anyway.

The product arrived well packaged and easy instructions. The carry case is extremely well made with separate pockets for the compressor and bits. Connecting to the battery is easy and the hose is more than long enough for my 20 ft camper. It works well and is accurate. One odd thing which could be a safer feature or it assumes that we have long arms is the positioning of the on/off switch. When the compressor is connected to the battery and the hose to the back tyre the pressure gauge is near the tyre and the on off switch on the compressor??? I switched it on briefly walked to the back cane back etc. Now it could be that there is an on off lever or attachment to regulate pressure near the gauge but I haven’t got one. Maybe a safety feature???? I still like it though. Solidly made. Easily portable.
