Great tool
I didn't know what I was missing before I bought a 12" miter saw. The Dewalt 780 is well made and very accurate but also quick to change from cut to cut. My saw needed some tweaking on the pre-set stops but that was an easy thing to do. After that it was ready to go. The fit and finish of everything was good. The slides are a little rough at first but seem to wear in over a little bit of time. That was a concern at first and other reviews mention it as well but it doesn't seem to be a problem now. The sawdust bag works okay but has very limited capacity. The shadow light also works very well. Mine is slightly off (maybe .005) but after using it for a while it's easy to compensate. It's a great feature. I haven't looked at the manual to see it that's adjustable but it's only off by something like the width of a sharp pencil line and once you've adjusted yourself to that you can split a pencil line. The motor torque is surprisingly strong at start up. A soft start would have been better but, again, it's a very minor issue on a great saw. Purists and professionals may not love this as much as me but it's fast, easy and accurate for my needs. My radial arm saw hasn't even been turned on since I got this 780. I also bought the Dewalt stand. It works great too. The work support adjustments require some tweaking to get perfect when there's a need to change them but it's easy enough. If you have a jamb level it's REALLY easy. The extension arms work well on long material and stay pretty level even when extended way out. I've added this mini review because it's such a good companion piece with the saw. If this was lost or stolen I'd order a new one immediately. It's just incredibly fast to work with; it's easy to change the setups and the cuts are very nice. I did buy a better blade for trim work but the stock blade works fine for less delicate pieces.

Very, Very Nice Miter Saw
The Dewalt 780 was a great purchase. I got it at an excellent sale price around Black Friday so the cost was comparable to the 779 model which is essentially the same unit minus the XPS light...but the light is worth every penny. Unlike laser lines on some units which are notorious for going off kilter, the XPS light is mounted behind the blade and the shadow it casts is your cut line. Fool proof every time. Keep in mind you also may need to calibrate the blade. Mine was spot on 90 degrees to the fence from the factory but the bevel needed some tweaking which was actually a very simple bolt adjustment. Zero wobble on the blade which was also a nice surprise, and it performed great. Little tear out with the Dewalt 60 tooth blade on typical lumber yard pine, but the cuts were nice and smooth and spot on 90 degrees on both the vertical and horizontal, triple checked with a precision square. This thing went through some recently split Walnut, and some of the pieces were pretty big, it went right through them. Only thing I don't like is the screw clamp, they need to rethink that one, it just takes forever, and I definitely wish there was more of a base plate for wider things like uneven slabs I'd normally shim which can be jenky, but I can make some sort of an extension piece for that. Overall, super happy with the unit. I wish my table saw from another manufacturer was this trouble free.

Great Product!
Dewalt is the best, what else can I say. I've used this brand for years and they have never let me down. Dewalt tools are durable, well thought out and very dependable. Cut quality is great and the grip is very ergonomic and comfortable. Catching this saw on sale made it a great value for the money! Pay once, cry once.

Perfect Out of the Box, A Pleasure to Use
I was a little nervous after reading reviews claiming sticky slides. My DWS780 arrived in a beat-up box, but the saw was perfect when it came out of that box. Perfectly in square, both bevel and miter. The slides run as smooth as silk, not the slightest catch or crunch. I was prepared to buy a replacement blade right away, as the blades on new saws are often junk, but the 60 tooth finish blade produced cross cuts with a surface like glass. I checked the intermediate miter and bevel stops with my digital bevel gauge, and they are right on. The fences are flat (checked with a Starrett straight edge) and square to the table. The LED light is a more precise line-up device than the laser on my previous SCMS. Overall operation and cut quality are the best of any unit I've used, including some very pricey European tools. Still, it's not perfect. A soft start motor would be a worthwhile improvement, as the considerable jolt on startup is requires heavy pressure on the workpiece, which is tiring. The hold-down clamp is sloppy and difficult to tighten without shifting the workpiece. Dust collection is a joke. The dust bag is useless, and the odd size dust collection tube is too small to be effective with a ShopVac and it runs all the way to the rear of the slides, which already project way too far to mount the saw reasonable close to a wall. Update March 20, 2015 Still working perfectly after several months of everyday use. I have not had to make the first adjustment. My previous SCMS required almost daily cajoling or threats before it would deliver square cuts. The DeWalt blade is still scalpel sharp and completely vibration free. I am now completely comfortable and accurate with the LED guide light and no longer lower the saw to put a tooth on the mark before pulling the trigger. My only regret is that I didn't swap my old saw for this one years ago.

DEWALT DWS780 12 Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
I purchased this about a year ago. I've used it in a ton of projects around the house while i was remodeling my new (1970 build) house. The blade that comes with the saw is alright all purpose blade - but you may need additional blades that are suited to what you're planning on doing. I like the Diablo blades myself based on my experience with them. But i'm sure somebody will tell me that my choice of blades sucks and that i should use what they're using. Anyway - this saw is a great contractor grade saw. It is precise, it is powerful, it's easy to use and clean and it is built for the heavy duty projects while keeping it within portable weight. The saw features nice and easy to use mounts for the stand (sold separately) I loved: The size, versatility, precision, lighting system, ease of cleanup, ability to hook up to shop vac, ease of adjustment I was ok with: The weight The default blade I didn't care for: The cutting guide line - this saw uses a lighting system to make the shadow of the blade fall on what you're cutting so that you can see where you're cutting. That's all well and good in a dark room - outside that line is barely there if at all. Also it makes it hard to see where you're cutting unless you bring the blade all the way down to what you're cutting. It is not a HUGE issue for me - but i don't like it. I would much prefer to have a nice strong laser line ALONG with the lighting system. The lighting system is surely useful - don't get me wrong. I just would prefer it used just as a lighting system rather than a targeting system as well.

Now that I have your attention
When ever I buy something I read the one star ratings first. This is a very good saw. I would like to address some of the complaints. It doesn't slide easily. At first it is very rough when sliding back and forward. This seems to smooth out the more it is used. Don't be afraid to use some lithium grease which will help. This is a big saw with a lot of weight on the glides when fully extended this causes great pressure on the bearings especially when the saw is in the full down position. As you get used to the saw you will intuitively know how hard to push and this "problem" will not be an issue. Because of the 12 inch blade most of the work you will do will be chopping anyway. If you are a fine wood worker this saw can work for you but if you can't compensate for some small issues then you need to spend a lot more to be happy. Poor dust collection: the best way to get around this is to hook your shop vac up and chuck the dust bag. If you cut slowly you will find most of the dust is sucked into the vac. There is still some that makes it's way around the exit port but that is because Dewalt made the largest collector they could and still be able to fit it through the fence. The blade cuts rough: They certainly did not include their best blade with this product. It cuts clean when chopping slowly but when doing a sliding cut it will splinter the back part of the stock. Any wood worker has different blades for different purposes. The included blade is a basic framing blade. Get the right blade for the job. It's too heavy: yes it is which adds to the stability. I would not want to move this saw every day. Once it's set up it is a work horse. The free stand that amazon throws in is a must. That stand is 4 star! Can't see the shadow guide in the bright sun: this is true and you would need to line up your work the old way by lowering the saw to the cut line before starting it. other than that the shadow is incredibly accurate and great to use in the shop. When my saw came all the angles were true and the fence was perfect. That should be checked when you open the box. I am very happy with this product but as you can tell from this post it's not for everybody. Unless something fails prematurely, I would certainly buy this product again.

An Absolute Treasure
I was in need of a new saw that would replace an older 12" Ryobi chop saw (toy). I also wanted to eliminate the remaining nagging need for a less accurate radial arm saw. I had already replaced the need for overhand dados with a good router and the needs for most finish work with a highly accurate sled and fence on my table saw and needed something that could perform as a chop saw but also had the depth to crosscut a decent depth for stairs, flooring and really wide trim and finish pieces that ould be awkward to cut on the table saw no matter the setup. I have not noticed ANY of the problems mentioned by some reviewers and the rather uniform form of those complaints leads me to believe some of them at least may be paid guerrilla commenters. The saw was checked right out of the box with a dial gauge and was dead on. The factory blade was not bad actually. It cuts cleanly as a general purpose crosscut blade but will obviously not last as long as a higher quality blade will or cut quite as cleanly as a finer toothed blade will but it cut through a set of 2 x 12 pressure treated for decking stairs very well; it also cut through some clear grade pine shelving without splintering the edge of the cut. I will still change the blade for really fine stuff. Also the saw didn't seem to bog down in the least going through the heavy pressure treated wood. The XPS system is a freaking dream to use and such a vast improvement over any of the laser systems I've seen or used. If you bring the blade down almost to the wood you get a razor fine line where the saw will cut so you know exactly where the blade is going - no more adding a 1/16" or an 1/8" and the gravy is that you don't need to spin the blade up while your face is closer to the wood and blade to line the cut up because the XPS system is independent of the blade - just remember to turn it off when you're done using the saw. or you'll kill the long lived LEDs before their time and waste expensive electricity. The dust bag is a joke as all dust bags have always been on all miter saws since they first came out. You can probably hook it up to a shop vac and be fine. The blade does quite a powerful job of chucking the saw dust out of the cut area giving it some momentum going into the dust chute. I have been hooking mine up to my roll around 1hp Grizzly dust collector though and love the performance and would say the claims about the dust collection of the hood behind the blade of this saw are not very much exaggerated. In fact I made a few cuts through some of the scrap 2 x 12 material without the dust collector or dust bag and received almost no dust in front of the saw. (It will shoot it out about 15-20 feet behind the saw though) I used a 1 1/2" to 4" Fernco coupler (cost like 4 bucks) on mine and a 6" length of 4" PVC scrap (the white stuff) to connect this to the 4" hose from the dust collector and it works like a charm. The bearings. Many are the whinings about the bearings and the accuracy at full extension - especially when using the back fence to be able to cross cut 16". The first thing is that they stick or are hard to move. The first couple of passes out of the box and the bearings did in fact seem a bit stiff. There is little to no lube on the bars right out of the box as the bearings have not been slid over them. A few passes and they loosened up a bit; a little machine oil and they flew. The only time they seemed to bog after that was when I was making some test passes through scrap with no bag or dust collector hooked up to see how much dust was actually being captured by the blade hood. I'm sure this just accelerated what would happen slowly anyway but dust caked on the bearing did succeed in bogging up the glides. A simple wipe down followed by a few squirts of machine oil and I was back in business. That is simple, common sense maintenance though and shouldn't be held as a ding against the saw. The other popular complaint is the accuracy at the full 16" cut depth. I made and installed the sub fence by following the instructions in the manual and made some test cuts. It bears to mention that 16" wide pieces of lumber of any length can be quite unwieldy and should be clamped before cutting - both for accuracy and for the love of our fingers. There was less than a 0.002" difference between the near side and the far side of the cut. That is far, far less than 1/64th of an inch and not noticeable in any finish work and I dare say a good bit closer to perfect than any of the cuts made on mass produced furniture. I've since used the saw to make 16" deep serving table made up of glued up pine panels and it is dead on square and level. As far as I am concerned that is near enough to perfect as makes no difference and about as close as you can get with any woodworking equipment. I love this saw and see many years of use in it if taken care of properly. I did find it kind of amusing that the Ryobi branded stand I had purchased for my older Ryobi 12" miter saw required me to make an adapter plate out of plywood to fit the Ryobi saw to the clamps that hold it on the stand but the Dewalt fit right on the same clamps with no issue like they were made for it.

Perfect Mitre for wood working
This is high quality machine. It came 99% accurate right out of the box. I was also surprised to see that it is 'Made in Italy'. Everything inside looks like it was made for European market. It comes with adjustable speed and the shadow light (an awesome feature to have). Only concern was the import date 08/2023. But i got a very good deal and works perfectly.

Lourd mais utile
Cette scie est lourde, et montée sur un rail dewalt, mis à part comment baisser le bras, mais c'est un outil super génial qui scie des poteaux de 90 mm voire plus. Je le conseille

Awesome saw
Purchased this saw to replace my original 10" miter saw which I have had for a few years. My previous saw did not provide me precise miter corners even though I had checked and adjusted the guides and angles a number of times. Thought it might be a user problem but when this saw was available at a reduced price compared to local retail I decided to make a change. It is remarkable how precise it cuts without making any adjustments. I checked the blade and fence angles when received and found them precise and angles accurate. Kinda wish I had made the move earlier but when starting out it is hard to purchase top end on everything, however this was a great purchase which should give me accurate cuts and last a lifetime for the handy man work it does. Delivery was less then a week and quicker then the estimated delivery date. It operates better on a 20 amp circuit. Found it was occasionally tripping the breaker on a 15 amp circuit when starting.
