I had someone donate to me a bag of alphabet noodles, and man! Did I forget how much I loved those noodles! I wish the letters got bigger to spell words because that’s what we did as kids. But you know what, who cares. Do I want my boys playing with their food to spell a word? Heck no! Guess who gets to clean up that mess?! However, have you tried finding the noodles/ pasta in a grocery store? Because that was like trying to find a needle in a haystack where I live. Maybe my neighborhoods too “vanilla” 😂. But I was SOOOO excited to FINALLY find that amazon is selling this cheap enough to buy. Now I can have this noodle on hand if I need to make a soup for my son if he gets sick again. Now this is way more economical by comparison! And I don’t have to drive all around town trying to locate it. I love it. I was enjoying WAY TOO MANY bags of it when I got sick the next month. It’s just so easy to enjoy that comfort of a childlike noodle when you’re sick. It REALLY absorbs the broth, so it’s like broth flavored noodles and it’s just fun and delicious to eat! I mean, you don’t get a big bag, but you get a lot of bags in a box. So I mean, do the math and weight it out for yourself. Maybe you have it in your neighborhood cheaper then I think $.86. And if so then go for that. But for me this was a cheaper and easier solution. And one that makes everyone so happy! Now if only they had numbers too. But again, who cares, it’s still just fun to see it. Looking at those letters while you eat them. D’oh just went in my mouth, yum too. 😂

I’ve bought plenty of pasta over the years, but there’s something about La Moderna that keeps it firmly in the “simple things done right” category. This Alphabet pasta is exactly that. There’s nothing complicated or fancy about it, and that’s precisely why I like it so much. It’s an inexpensive, versatile pantry staple that cooks well, tastes good, and can be used for a surprising number of meals. First, I was very pleased with how my order arrived. Rather than receiving a bunch of individual pasta bags loosely thrown into a shipping box, mine came in the original La Moderna case. Everything was packed together neatly, and the individual bags were protected by the sturdy cardboard outer carton. That may sound like a small detail, but anyone who has ordered dry pasta online knows what can happen when thin plastic bags get tossed around during shipping. A punctured bag can leave you with pasta scattered everywhere. Thankfully, that wasn’t an issue here. My case arrived in good condition, and the bags inside were intact. The alphabet shape is obviously the fun part. These are tiny pieces of pasta shaped like letters, making them especially good for soups. Kids get a kick out of seeing the different letters in their bowls, but I certainly wouldn’t consider this a pasta that’s only for children. The small size makes it genuinely useful. It distributes nicely throughout a soup instead of dominating every spoonful, and you get a good combination of broth, vegetables, meat, and pasta with each bite. One of my favorite uses is a simple tomato-based Mexican sopa. I lightly toast the dry pasta in a little oil until some of the pieces begin developing a golden color, then add the tomato mixture and broth and let everything simmer. The pasta absorbs some of that flavor while cooking and gives you a comforting bowl of soup that takes very little effort to make. Add some chicken, vegetables, or whatever else you have available and you can easily turn it into a more substantial meal. It also works wonderfully in chicken soup. Because the letters are so small, I actually prefer them over larger noodles when I want something light. They cook quickly, and there’s no need to fight with long noodles hanging off the spoon. I can see this being particularly convenient when making soup for younger kids. Texture has been very consistent for me. Like most small pasta, you do need to pay attention to the cooking time because there isn’t a huge window between properly cooked and overly soft. That’s especially true if you’re putting it directly into soup and then leaving the pot sitting on the stove. The pasta will continue absorbing liquid. Cook it appropriately, though, and it has a pleasant texture and holds up nicely. Another thing I appreciate is how versatile a case of small pasta like this can be. Obviously soup is the first thing that comes to mind, but you can use it as a substitute for other tiny pasta shapes in recipes, make a simple buttered pasta side dish, add it to broth when someone wants something warm and uncomplicated, or incorporate it into a thicker stew. It’s also one of those ingredients that is nice to have sitting in the pantry because you can turn a handful of inexpensive ingredients into an actual meal without needing to make another trip to the grocery store. The flavor is exactly what I expect from good dried durum wheat pasta: mild enough to work with virtually anything but still with enough wheat flavor that it doesn’t taste like filler. The pasta takes on the flavor of whatever broth or sauce it is cooked with particularly well. I also like the smaller 7-ounce bags. A giant bag might technically be more convenient for someone cooking huge batches, but these smaller packages are actually practical for our household. I can open what I need while the remaining pasta stays factory sealed. If you don’t use alphabet pasta every single week, that’s preferable to having one enormous opened package sitting in the pantry for months. There is also a nostalgic quality to alphabet pasta that I wasn’t really expecting. You see the little letters floating around in a bowl and immediately understand why this type of pasta has been around forever. It makes an otherwise ordinary bowl of soup a little more interesting. Kids can look for their initials or try to find different letters, while the adults can simply enjoy the soup. It’s one of those rare food products where the novelty doesn’t interfere with its usefulness. For anyone unfamiliar with La Moderna, don’t mistake the inexpensive price for low-quality pasta. This is straightforward everyday pasta, and it does its job very well. I’m not expecting artisan bronze-cut Italian pasta when I’m making a quick pot of sopa on a weekday afternoon. What I want is pasta that cooks consistently, has a good texture, tastes good, works with the recipe, and doesn’t cost a fortune. That’s exactly what this provides. The case packaging also makes this a particularly good option for stocking the pantry. Dry pasta has a long shelf life when stored properly, so having multiple sealed bags available is convenient. I can grab one whenever I’m making soup without worrying about whether I remembered to pick up pasta at the store. Overall, I’m very happy with the La Moderna Alphabet pasta. The little letters are fun, but underneath the novelty is simply a dependable, versatile durum wheat pasta that works extremely well for soups and other recipes. Mine arrived nicely protected in the original case, the individual packages were intact, the pasta cooks consistently, and the smaller bags are convenient for keeping the remaining supply sealed and fresh. If you make chicken soup, Mexican sopa, vegetable soup, or other broth-based dishes regularly, this is an easy pantry staple to recommend. Sometimes the best products are the ones that don’t need to reinvent anything. La Moderna gives you good pasta, a fun traditional shape, convenient packaging, and plenty of possibilities for inexpensive homemade meals. I’ll happily keep a few bags of these in the pantry.

These are a lot smaller than I thought they would be, but still tasty and the grandkids love pasta. I love to watch them try to spell words while they are eating. Seems like a good way to get kids to eat their food.

We are on the second box of these alphabet pastas. We use them with my homemade chicken broth. My kids grew up on alphabet pasta in a bowl of broth and it continues to be the comfort food they seek when sick or just need comfort. I used to buy them in supermarkets but this is now almost impossible to find. So glad I came across these and can now buy them a case at a time.

Going to dye the pasta with food coloring and use them mixed into a sensory bin with rice. Plan to have the kids sort out the letters they find either by letter, color OR match them to a word (like their name) spelt on a card. A plan to also make alphabet soup with them. Can’t wait to watch their eyes open when they see letters in their soup! It’s a small bag of pasta but for less than $2 I got enough for both projects.
