The lead is retractable. Not the whole tip. The other end is removable to reveal an eraser. You pull the eraser to add leads.

What is the diameter of the pencil itself? Is the .3 version a different diameter form the .5

Just checked and my Zebra Mini pencil takes leads size 0.5mm. The pensil itself is 5mm in diameter. I believe you might be talking about the T3 and T5 options, which as far as I can tell stands for all silver or mix of silver and gold colors.
