Oddities

This album surprised me, considering it followed after The Jesus Experience. I was expecting a much harder tone. Nearly everything published after it was the harsh atonal roaring that departed from the works that made Bride attractive to its fans in the beginning. This album contains a strange mix of about three different styles. I can hear a little of their classic heavy metal, mixed with some hardcore stuff, plus something I could almost call bluegrass. Whatever it is, it's a delight to the ears. It's strange. It's creative. It's also got some of the most meaningful lyrics I've heard on a Bride album. I wish later albums had been more like this one.

The album has a lot of slow tempo songs but with a strong lyrical message. I had my doubts before about this album but after listening to it, it was simply stunning. It;s not the rock or metal album like Scarecrow or any other before this release, despite that, it is a wonderful listen and has a lot of songs that you can relate to.Oddities is that, it is an odd album at first but once you delve in to its message, you will find the reason why this album is in my opinion, an underrated album by Bride.

I'll give this one 4 stars simply because although it is great, I don't find it quite as good as some of their past (and future) work. This album took a while to grow on me...it's pretty harsh. But when it did, I couldn't get enough of it. If you don't like it, give it time. It's much more alternative sounding in some parts, yet other parts are very heavy. As always, Dale's lyrics are deep and thought provoking. A favorite line of mine taken from Isaiah 64:7 is "If my sin remains I have chosen my God." I urge you to pull out the lyrics and read along while the music plays.

In "Odditties", Bride turned from their traditional metal and went to a more alternative style. But it's good none the less. Dale Thompson's piercing voice and thought-provoking lyrics complement the music, making them a band that Christians and non-Christians would enjoy.
