Review: Engaging, funny and sad - Really fun quick read! Review: Interesting in ways that aren't usual - This is a truly unique book and demonstrates how different factors play out in how a family comes together. It may not be just the resources available to a family. It's also the overall approach to life that can have a very strong bearing on how the actual days pan out for a family and without doubt the kind of influence that it can have especially on children as they grow into their own beings eventually.

EXCELLENT READ
Excellent read . Worth Buying and reading this book was a rollercoaster journey . I was amazed by the author and her siblings resilience towards life and their strong bond with each other. The way they handled the situations at such a young age was amazing and you feel a little heartbreaking for all the things they had to suffer. Just want to say : it will definitely make you think about your life and the privileges one have .

A powerful book
This book had been on my reading list for many months. It had wonderful reviews, but (as I know from experience), great reviews does not necessarily mean that I would love the book too. I had to read it myself. And when I did - I was blown away. To summarize the book in just a few lines - it's the real life story of Ms. Walls; she grew up with a set of appallingly selfish, impractical and self centered parents, shuttling from town to town, and living in abject poverty. Her father is basically alcoholic, and her mother irresponsible & self centered. She loves her parents (as all children do), but it takes her many years to understand that this love is one-sided, and her parents love just themselves, and perhaps each other. How Ms. Walls and her siblings manage to break free of their parents, and how they rise above their circumstances (against all odds), the bond the Walls siblings share (a bond borne out a shared, miserable childhood) forms the rest of the story. What makes the book all the more powerful is one, the writer seems to harbor no anger against her parents, two - Jeanette Walls is a well known journalist in the US, & perhaps a part of NYC high society. To write about her deprived childhood would have required a lot of courage. Hats off to her. I rarely re-read books, but in this case, I just might - maybe just to remind myself all over again what a wonderful set of parents and what a loving & priveledged childhood I've had.

Could be your next favourite memoir.
This book teaches you to fight against all odds. It teaches you to be patient and resilient and give in all you've got. It teaches you to get the best out of every opportunity. It teaches you to tackle hardships and not let anyone bring you down. It tells you that all your struggles are worth something. It makes you dream while keeping your feet on the ground. It teaches you the importance of family. Lastly, it tells you to skeedadle when you've got it rough. The innocence in the writing makes you nostalgic and grateful at the same time. It feels like entering a picturesque garden after climbing the toughest rocks. I've always felt that every moment in our lives is leading us to a grand ending. Walls' memoir made that belief a little stronger. You may not have it all figured out now but it's important to keep faith in yourself.

Loved this unputdownable story of grit
My heart went out to the Walls children but appreciated the author for the kindness she still showed her parents under adversity (though she had every right not to). You're holding your breath every chapter waiting for her luck to turn, and hope against reason for the parents to get some sense knocked into them. I recommend this uplifting and heartbreaking story.

Boooring
I usually spend time finding about the book that I am going to buy. This time however, I just saw the number of reviews and bought it. It is not for me. Careless or as the author would like to argue, carefree parents[extreme rightwing type, girl cooks hot dog at age 3 and get severely burnt and the father kidnaps her from the hospital]. Just not for me, it has ton of good reviews.
