Is this soft enough to use on decorative tacks?

I used it on the decorative tacks. I didn't have a problem. It worked a lot better than a rubber maillot or a regular hammer.

I don't know anything about hammers. would this work for hanging small to medium sized pictures? which size do you own? the nail i am using is tiny.

This would work just fine. If it is ONLY pictures you will be hanging, I would probably suggest an 8oz. or a 10oz. hammer (depending on if you're driving a nail into the stud). I've got a 22oz. framing hammer that I wouldn't even think about using on a finish nail. I also have an 8oz. finish hammer I only use for small nails and pin punches. I hope that helps.
