I am so happy with the purchase of this portable scale by American Weigh Scales! Out of the box, it was balanced and ready to weigh. Two AA batteries were installed (need to remove a plastic battery barrier to start operation) and the operation was intuitive. On-Off button, Mode button, and TARE button to reset the scale to zero once you weigh a container to be used to hold a product. I purchased this scale to weigh containers of paints for acrylic flow painting. I didn't need a large scale and wanted something that could measure both grams and ounces. This scale does both. It also folds up and is about the same size as my iPhone 8 plus with double the thickness in an Otterbox case. If this scale works for its intended purpose for a year or more, it will be well worth the eight bucks I spent on it. There is a 10-year limited warranty on this item, but with all the hoops you generally have to go through for warranty service, it might be worth the cost of a couple of mochas to simply buy a new one. Nice to know the company stands by their product though.

Product well build and sturdy, packaged well. Overall design very rugged. Accuracy is close enough. If you want more accuracy use the SM-501. Checked against several NVLAP Class 1 weights at 500g and 100G; unit was spot on and then I calibrated the unit anyways. Still spot on. I then used mixed Class II and III weights, plus several at Class M2. 0.2g (200mg), .5g (500mg), 1g, 2g, 5g, 10g . 50g, 100g, 200g and 500g. All spot on, 0.1g (100mg) would not register. These class weights were verified on my A&D FX-300iN $800 NTEP scale after warming up and re-calibrating with a Class 1 NVLAP weight with the accuracy of 0.0001g to 0.00001g. Accuracy was decent enough for its low resolution of 0.1g w/+-0.1g for this portable $10 scale; you couldn't expect anything this good for $10 bucks anywhere.. However, ( I bought 2 of them at the same time) the scales will not read anything bellow 200mg (.2g). It will after I put a 5g weight on the unit then remove the 5g weight and then place less than 200mg on the scale. It should read either .2g or .1g, but instead reads 0.0g. Now if I put a 200mg weight on the scale it reads .2g or 200 mg every time, but if I ad separately a 100mg, 50mg, 20mg x2 and a 10mg the scale reads 0.0g even though there is exactly 200mg on the scale. Again remove the multiple weights and add a 5g weight, remove the 5g weight and place the multiple weights adding up to 200mg and it will read this. I checked the weight stacking on corners plus middle of scale with a 200g center, 100g on opposite corners (100gx2), 50g on another corner and the last remaining corner I place 2 x 20g and a 5g. The scale read 495g and each weight added was accurate displayed in the LCD as it was added one by one on both scales. You can trust this scale will do well over 200mg (.2g) for the $10 it costs. The only next scale model SM-501 is more accurate at .01g and also has Troy ounces if you need a cheaper accurate “Pocket” scale which is economical at $20-35 average. I always use a cheap pocket scale to reduce the wear on my expensive NTEP scales.

nice little scale, not perfect but close enough, unless you are looking for exact perfection then this might not be for you, but + or - a few tenths of milligram than this will do just fine. Some people will be picky, but what I use it for it does just fine. sometimes adjust + or - to original weight, but nothing crazy or to far off. Usually dead on to original measurement. may adjust = or - a tenth but usually gets back to original after a few seconds. I use to measure with confidence that it gets me within decent measurements. Like i said if you are trying to get down to tenths or hundreds then maybe another scale may be required, for regular smoke this works just fine. Will adjust properly if you are light or heavy in weight. no complaints, great pocket scale, AAA batteries so easy to replace if needed, needs a weight to be calibrated properly, but works just fine out of box, nickle measurement showed properly on first try and maintains true to original. so no complaints. I would definitely buy again without hesitation. now if you are trying to do science measurements then maybe not for you, but everyday regular use, just fine. no complaints, works fine every time, light is bright, numbers are large. buy with confidence it will meet your needs on a daily or regular basis. if you are really picky, then look elsewhere. Measures to what i buy. would buy again without hesitation. Price is fair. built in cover works well. no issues, instruction are built into lid if you need to make adjustment, haven't had the need, so happy with purchase.

Update: I've dropped it, flooded it with fluids and it still works and it's still accurate. Just checked it with my standard calibration weight. The one thing I haven't done is put a weight that's too heavy on it. It's hard to do with such a small scale. 5 stars for 5 years! End update. Hey, this will weigh up to 1 kilo (or 2.2 lbs) which is good enough for most kitchen applications. The price was just so good! The jump to scales that could handle higher weights wasn't worth it. I got the 500 gm calibration weight and felt foolish ordering it because the scale was right on the money. The tare is awesome! Not every kitchen scale has this and it's a terrible pain subtracting the weight of the container from the total. Just be aware this scale has a tiny tiny footprint - 3.9 x 5.8 x 1 inches - it fits in your pocket. Not so good for large (and yet light) items. It's best for measuring spices, a cup of flour or sugar. This scale is great for measuring out small quantities very accurately. For example, they sold me tetracycline in packages for a 20 gallon tank. Well, guess what, I have a 3/4 gallon tank. Good way to kill my ailing fish trying to eyeball 1/20 minus 1/4 of assorted heap sizes. Also good for measuring out tea and getting a consistent cup.

I purchased this scale to weigh jewelry and other precious metals. The scale displays in Grams, Diamond Weight, Troy Ounces, Ounces, and karats so all of my bases are covered. The scale arrived packaged in a box and plastic tray insert. Amazon shipped it in a bubble mailer so I was a little concerned it may have been damaged during shipping but I tested it with a calibration weight (see below) and found it to be 100% accurate. I was also pleasantly surprised to find this scale shipped with two Duracell batteries and not a cheaper brand. The unit even has a place to store two extra batteries for future use. Other than it's seemingly very good accuracy, what I like best about this scale is the compact design. At approximately 4" x 6" x 1" it easily fits in a back pocket or bag. If you don't already have a calibration weight, I suggest purchasing one with this unit. Even if the unit is accurate at first, it's likely that you'll want it at some point to confirm no changes occur over time. I went with Smart Weigh CW-50G Carbon Steel 50g OIML Class M1: ± 3 mg Calibration Weight with Chrome Finish and the scale measured it perfectly. I'm very pleased with the performance of this scale, especially for it being so inexpensive.

This scale is perfect for my purposes. It can weigh items from 1/10th of gram to 1,000 grams and it's accuracy is within 1/10 of a gram (I tested this with most weights testing perfectly). So unless your weighing precious metals, I don't see how you could measure anything with more mass (may not fit on the weighing plate and give an inaccurate weight), but less weigh as the scales weighing plate is pretty small (2 1/5 inches X 3 inches), but for my purposes the size is perfect. The build seems very solid, easy to read digital screen (it's lighted), has the Tare function and a very clean look to the scale. I can't comment on Battery life as I haven't had it long enough to give an accurate description of the battery life. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and the speed at which it arrived. Definitely worth the price and one I would suggest buying for your smaller weighing jobs, depending on the mass of the objects or product you're weighing. Hope this helps. Thanks.. :)

UPDATED REVIEW 6/21/25: It's been nearly ten years since my original review, and I'm ready to bump up the rating from three stars to five. I use this little scale for SO MANY things, and at this point I don't know what I'd do without it. Mine will accurately weigh any small item (up to 1000g = 2.2 pounds), and even large envelopes and small packages can be weighed for postage if I set something else on the scale, tare it's weight, then add the large envelope or small package on top. My scale is accurate to a tenth of a gram, but it you need a scale even more precise, it looks like they've now got some with accuracy to 1/100th of a gram. Hopefully they've improved the batteries from the ones they were shipping when I bought my scale, but batteries aside, this scale is a bargain, and it will be a purchase you'll never regret. ORIGINAL REVIEW 11/20/15: I see everyone complaining about the batteries, and I agree. Mine are immediately going to recycling, and they probably aren't even good for that. I rec'd my scale today 11/20/15 and couldn't get it to work until I replaced the batteries with others. The ones provided are NOT dead--I removed their plastic wrapping, checked them with a voltage meter (they're fully charged), checked polarity (orientation) in the case, and even tried putting them in another device. They simply don't work. Very strange.

Good compact size, easy to operate and pretty precise (havent verified the accuracy). Its got a handy tare feature where you can place any container and press tare(set it to 0) then when you add things it will just show you the weight of the stuff you added..handy when your mixing resins or chemicals.

Bought this to weigh items for snailmail. Works very well. Very simple and neat. Stays in our stationery drawer. Folds up neatly and is easily transported in jacket pocket. So far batteries have lasted OK.

I really like this scale. I have bought many different models over the years to manage my daughter's very strict medical diet and I feel like this is the best portable scale I've owned. The case feels quite sturdy and stays in place (on many other scales the lid came off within a few days or weeks of use). Small size but not so much to be impractical. Good readibility
