For attaching to outside of backpack if there's not room inside backpack, or for attaching to hang and store it. Might also be useful if boating or camping to secure it somewhere? My daughter does not ever undo the buckle, though.

Can you recommend plastic containers that will fit inside if i put just one?

In the biggest compartment on the bag a sandwich sized container will fit in it with room to spare. Just don't put too much into the top zippered compartment.
