I was not afraid of death. All I prayed for now was to not die before winning back Tiger Hill for India. On the night of 3 July 1999, grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, all of 19 years old, was given a very crucial task along with the Ghatak Platoon of 18 Grenadiers Regimentโto capture the impenetrable Tiger Hill. Fresh after capturing Tololing Hill, the unit was high on josh, but also battered and bruised. Braving the inhospitable terrain, freezing cold weather and facing fierce enemy fire, he was the first in this Ghatak Platoon to reach the top. Even after his body was pierced by multiple bullets and grenade shrapnel, he charged the enemy bunkers and cleared the path for the regiment to capture the mighty peaks of Tiger Hill. He displayed the most conspicuous courage, indomitable gallantry, grit and determination under extreme adverse circumstances during the Kargil War, which made him the youngest awardee of the highest Indian military awardโthe Param Vir Chakra. The Hero of Tiger Hill is the true story of a brave soldier who leaves no stone unturned and fights valiantly for the honour of his country. In his own words, Captain (Hony) Yogendra Singh Yadav gives us an inspiring account of the Kargil War through his transformative journey of fulfilling his most cherished dream of serving the Indian Army. Review: RAW AND REAL !! - About the book: This autobiography tells a story of the youngest Param Vir Chakra awardee in India, who selflessly fought for his country during the Kargil war in the D sector. The book covers everything that is from his childhood, adolescence, village life, and his fulfillment of long cherished dream, marriage and the Kargil war where Indian soldiers were fighting at 16,500 feet. The book has numerous tales from his upbringing which influenced his mindset and the way he led his life. My opinion: The book has very detailed information about everything related to the author, making it quite transparent. How his cultural life and childhood lessons molded him holds more space in the book. I felt proud reading this as we share the same background and reading terms like Uttar Pradesh, Bulandshahar, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Faridabad felt like reading about someone belonging to my own house. Finally, my search for a personality who shares the same birthday came to an end. I always dreamt of having someone who made history on 10th May and I found the one. This book isnโt only a number of pages rather a bag of emotions expressed by the author. I would strongly suggest this book to every reader and non-reader to know that warriors walk among us. Reading about a living hero is truly an honor itself and Iโm delighted to read this piece written with such candor. It made me think about how mentally tough not only our warriors, but their families, must be. How they cope up with the loss. How do people keep finding their meaning in life in the midst of such chaos, where they are suddenly informed of the death of dear ones? How people go about their days in the hope of seeing their loved ones during their next visit. It all made me think where on the one end we feel proud to get the hold of a geographical location, on the other end their supreme sacrifices made me think about the loss. We are able to feel proud but at a heavy cost. Itโs a small tribute we all can give to our Indian Army soldiers who laid their life in the line of duty for their Nation, is to educate ourselves on their acts of bravery. Jai Hind. Review: Jai hind - Every defence aspirant should read it
