Great Zombie Weapon, Tool, and Display Object
The axe/tomahawk itself is perfect. There is nothing wrong with the one that I received. When I received it, it came in a decent size shipping container. When I opened it, I was greeted with a few strips of those giant air bubbles and the axe itself. The axe was only covered in a bit of plastic. There was no box for the item itself so you wouldn't know that it was actually from Cold Steel or what the item is specifically. So in other words, the packaging could be nicer. I expected more from Cold Steel than just plastic wrap on the head. The sheath was one of the reasons that I bought the axe. I thought it was pretty cool and I was not disappointed. When I removed the sheath, there was a bit of paper, held on my grease/oil, probably to keep the blade in good condition. I removed it an wiped off all the oils from the axe. I tested the sharpness of the axe and found it to be sharp enough. It can cut through paper rather smoothly but is not 100% consistent through out the blade. That doesn't really matter too much since you are going to be doing a lot of chopping an not much fine cutting. Just in case you were curious, there is an area close to the head of the axe that you can hold ergonomically. With that, you get more control of the axe head and can do some fine cutting if you wish. The spike on this is very sharp and can definitely be used as a weapon during something like the zombie apocalypse. Even though the odds of actually having a zombie apocalypse is nearly 0%, it is still a fun tool to have. The handle feels very durable and strong. Total weight is 2 lbs 3 oz or 990 grams. It has a nice heft to it. Whether you are using it for some fun destruction, handy work, or a weapon for self defense, then this is a pretty good axe for your money. It costs slightly more than some lower end ones but it is well worth the $10-$20 more.

not a thrower but a very good hawk
(to start off i know in my writing an educated person may find many errors but i am a college student and i would like a break from writing everything with a strict eye for grammer and syntax) i recently purchased this hawk because it looked mean and plus i wanted a combat tomahawk by cold steel. at first i looked at the vietnam tomahawk but the hickory handle turned me off and i read a review in which someone likened it to a toothpick after it snapped the first time he threw it. what i wanted out of this hawk was a heavy hitter that you could throw if you hade a trget that was farther that the 19 inches of reach this hawk provides. although. the first requirment was filled to the max it could easily lob off a head or an arm the second requirment, being able to throw it well, was not filled so abundantley. some people may like this hawk for a thrower one thing's for sure it would take the abuse willingly however the head is shaped like most axes or hatchets. the cutting blade comes to the half inch thickness of the blade in a bout a half inch after the tip of the edge rather than being more knife like, which in my opinion a thrower should be, where the edge comes to the thichness of the rest of the blade (which would be much less than half an inch) in a quarter of an inch or less. this would make it better for sticking. in addition the 19 inch handle does not lend itself well to throwing in my opinion. with all cons set aside this is a very robust hawk with a razor edge (unless you fall victim to cold steel's declining quality control) the handle i would say isn't that slick and does have a widened ending and lanyard hole. the size and heft of this hawk makes it very formidable but i wouldn't recomend it as a thrower however i would and will recomend it as BONE CRUSHER!

Cold Steel Trench Hawk... Perfection.
This Tomahawk RAWKS! 5/5 This is everything I hoped it would be, Cold Steel has really delivered. The design is bold and simple, just the way I like it. The 1055 steel for the axe head and the polypropylene handle are perfect for use and abuse and will take anything you throw at it. And in case your handle does break you can pick up a replacement for a few bucks. The axe head came sharp enough for chopping tasks and the spike was tapered to a needle point. The Secure-Ex sheath is great, others complain it doesn't have a belt attachment, but it is unique and has holes on it for paracord customizations. This tomahawk does it all! Want a tactical tomahawk? Look no further, with a huge spike, 19" of reach, and 24oz in weight it has a substantial feel in the hand. Want a tomahawk you can take on a camping trip or on the trail? Well it's great for that too. It's not just for fighting, this thing chops! I have took down several small trees and a medium size trees with ease and it rips through dead dried wood as well. The SOG and United Cutlery tomahawks are 15" in length which is limited to tactical applications(IMO). The 19" length on the Trench Hawk allows for greater power and momentum with each stroke. Want a good throwing tomahawk? The added 4" on the handle makes it a bit more difficult to throw, but this can be conquered with just a little bit of practice. It is a good thrower and the thud you hear as the spike drives into the target is more than satisfying. I have read many reviews that say the handle is too slippery. It would be if wet, but in dry situations I can't imagine it slipping out of any normal persons hands that has adequate grip strength. You can add grip tape or better you can stretch 700cc road bike tire over the handle, this provides the best rubber grip possible(IMO). The handle tapers outward at the end which is great, it prevents slipping and makes you aware of your grip position. The handle also has a lanyard hole. I hope this review was helpful, thank you for reading.

AWESOME (but slippery handle *see full review*)
This thing is awesome. SOOOOOO worth the cost. It is light but has a great heft to it. The handle is super light. I have the poly escrima stick and the poly axe head cane...same material. I have zero worries about mine breaking. I got it and put it to work. I actually used it to rough out a kuksa from a 8"x3" block of hickory. Worked great. I sharpened it after of course. I cannot say enough good things about it. The only con I found is as others have mentioned: the handle is a little slippery. I tried paracord wrapping and tarred twine wrapping but it just made it bulky. I've seen people use files on them to add contour, sandpapering them, stippling, flex seal spray, dipping, tennis racket tape,...all valid options, but ugly and WAY too time consuming. Searching on forums for something else (isn't it always like that) I stumbled upon a solution to what I was looking for but it worked perfect for the handle. That solution is . . . . HOCKEY TAPE. . . . I bought a couple of rolls not expecting a whole lot. It's super thin, is sticky enough not to be a pain and sticks great to itself. What happens when it gets wet? It allows the tomahawk to NOT LEAVE MY HAND! This stuff is freaking amazing. I have now used it on my hammers, 32oz peen, hand sledge, I redid an old sword handle, my smatchet now has some, a couple of bokken, my kid's wooden sword, ASP Street Defender, my maglite, my Streamlight Classic. This tape is worth it as much as the tomahawk. I have included the link for the tape I bought here on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AJJULZG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Buy the hawk and the hockey tape. You will not be disappointed.

Good Quality, But Not Very Durable
I ordered two of these Cold Steel Trench Hawks last week and I was really excited to use them! When I first pulled them out of the box I was extremely satisfied with the look and the feel of them. Out of the box it came with the sheath on and I was happy to see that when I took it of the blade had been oiled. It had a very solid look and feel to it and I knew instantly that it could be used both as a utility and a weapon. I took it out the next day to and old oak tree in my back yard where I do all of my knife and tomahawk throwing and decided to toss it around for a bit. It has excellent balance and rotation and it is light enough to throw from almost any distance, but hefty enough to stick in with a good thud as well. Unfortunately, about an hour into throwing I stepped back a few paces and threw it again, the tomahawk hit handle-side first and the handle cracked near the throat of the axe head. I figure that it was probably a factory defective handle and I wasn't too upset about it because I had ordered two of them. I tossed the broken one aside and began throwing the other one exclusively and twenty minutes later, to my disbelieve, I threw the tomahawk and it bounced off of the tree and hit some logs that were in a pile and the head of the axe just broke off completely. It says in the product description that the handles are very shock resistant but apparently they aren't that strong. I understand that this tomahawk was not meant for throwing, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars out of five because this would make an excellent camping/backpacking axe. Plus, at $35 bucks, you can't beat if for the quality.

Great Lightweight breaching tool!
I didn't really need this monster; my first line anti-zombie tools are a .40 Cal pistol on my hip and an M4 in the vehicle, and for emergency vehicle breaching I carry a decent size crowbar, but for the price, I just couldn't resist this bad boy! The size and weight of the Trench Hawk is significant: between a hatchet and a woodsman's axe. This is no lightweight Vietnam tomahawk. If you choke up from the bottom of the handle by one hand-length or so, the fulcrum pivot works well for one handed use (so long as you have some decent shoulder strength!). Two handed strikes are fast and powerful. The lanyard hole should be filled immediately with some 550 cord: accidentally releasing this beast could result in some serious bystander injury, and the 550 cord when properly configured as a lanyard works as a wrist sling: providing significant support and increased control for overhead swings. Stick with a lighter hawk if your use model is a one handed fighting hawk + knife in your weak hand, as the blade speed for that is a bit too slow due to the head weight. The quality of the hawk is top notch in all regards: strong synthetic handle, strong and serviceable attachment methodology, Thick steel, high quality edges, grinds and coating. The head's "sheath" is unique, functional and appears durable. The edges of this plastic cover are a bit sharp however so plan on rounding them down a bit with a file. There is no carry feature to this blade cover, though lanyard holes on the cover could be utilized to create an improvised carry solution with 550 cord. Another carry option, if you really think you would want to hip carry this, would be to use a small hammer loop. I'll be adding this to my breaching toolkit in my vehicle, as I think it could handle hacking though a car c-pillar if the jaws of life are not forthcoming. That being said, this is not a good solution for a camp axe, or a pack/survival tool. If you need a hatchet or an axe, a hammer side is much more valuable than a spike, and the hawks up-swept lower head curvature reduces overall blade strength). If you need to carry a survival tool (as I do when hiking), a Cold Steel Kukri machete, a Kershaw Outcast, or a Becker BK9 would be far more useful and much lighter; ditto for anti-personnel/rabid animal use. Highly Recommended as a lightweight breaching tool!

I'm No Tactical Tomahawk Guru.
I'm not one of the guys who spends $100+ on very many things I consider to be "simple" items. I may be on the verge of blasphemy for some but I don't a live in a world in which I pay over $100 for a tomahawk....after all, it is just a tomahawk. Sorry to all the true backyard warriors out there for offending your tactical sensibilities. I received this product and promptly took it apart to further sharpen the edges, paint the metal OD green and then used blue Loc-tite to re-attach the handle to the head. This is not a full tang axe...the metal only goes slightly past the lower attachment point. This tomahawk will mainly be used for ATV duty during hunting season. I didn't buy it to complete my end-of-the-world armory. It seems very durable and it was inexpensive. Both things that I like.... One thing I didn't like was the slippery handle. After a couple of licks at a piece of pine I knew I had to fix that. I didn't want to invest the time it takes to stimple the plastic (like the Glock guys do to their pistol grips) so I ran down to the local sporting goods store and picked up a roll of Easton batters tape. I wrapped the handle with the tape and the slippery handle was fixed for under $5. I also feel it worth mentioning that the tomahawk does have finger grooves in it just below the axe head. That makes it easy to grab the handle up high and use it with confidence for small tasks that require more control. Once I put this tomahawk through a harsh winter hunting season of whacking tree limbs, cutting bone, clearing shooting lanes and other various tasks I will report back. Bottom line...inexpensive tool that can perform as a multiple-tasker in the hunting world. Update: Five years later and I'm still beating the crap out of this tomahawk. It has held up superbly. I absolutely recommend this for any outdoorsman or hunter. It is a reliable workhorse. Update: Almost six year have passed and I'm still beating the crap out of this tomahawk. It is my go to tool when I go to the woods to prep for deer season. The handle wrap has long since fell apart and I will have to redo that. The head cover has lost a few screws as well. This tomahawk is a must have for anyone who spends time in the woods. Update: 13 years later and I am still using this tomahawk. Now relegated to yard work, it served me through 13 years worth of outdoor activities. Itโs beat up, it has been beat on, it has been sharpened more times than I can remember. I have used it as a hammer, used it as a club, used it as a prying tool and it has never broken. Yes, the head cover is long gone due to treatment on my part but the tool itself is a survivor. After 13 years, there are absolutely NO complaintsโฆonly admiration for a tool that has become a treasured companion for my adventures. It is equally at home riding neglected in the back rack of an ATV during hunting season or hanging in the garage waiting to trim a poison ivy vine. Just buy it and beat on it for 13 yearsโฆand enjoy a well-made tool for a decent price.

Solid Hawk
This is a well made tool by my standards. This hawk is made to be put into hard service; and not on a wall for display. The axe edge is sharp yet it widens to full thickness in less than an inch and the spike edge is squared off with a sharp pointed tip. The 5150 carbon steel or 1055 steel is extremely hard and will maintain it's edge despite severe abuse (I started abusing this hawk right out of the box.) The axe edge can readily be ground to suit your needs and the spike does not need a sharpened edge since it is a brute force puncture tool (not a letter opener, but a hole in masonry wall opener.) The polypropylene handle is light and somewhat flexible when placed under extreme torque, which ads to it's dependability. However, it is long by comparison to similarly priced hawks, and must be handled with extreme care and consideration while mastering one handed use (use two hands or choke up.) The handle is barely textured, so make use of the lanyard eyelet on the end. It would be a good idea to add a grip element to the handle as well. The finger grips in the throat of the axe head are a nice feature for fine controlled blade movements. The sheath is certainly innovative yet lacks a belt attachment, although that's why you need a Arsenal 5475 Hammer Holder or similar item (Duh!) Arsenal 5475 Hammer Holder This hawk is a great value for the cost. Look no further!

Very Impressed
I have to say, I mostly purchased my first one of these half on a lark. See, I have been wanting to get something along these lines for a while, but most of what I found was over priced, crap, or both. I mean, a friend bought the SOG tomahawk and while normally I really like SOG stuff, I hated their tomahawk. I had read good things about this one, saw it for a good price, and figured the best way to check it out (as no one local had them in store) was to go for it. I was NOT disappointed. First off, I find it quite nicely balanced. It is definitely a two hander in size (handle is a foot and a half long overall) but well balanced. One thing I like is that while the handle is some sort of resin, it is attached to the head by a pair of bolts. In my set of security heads I found one that can remove these bolts, so if I wanted to (or the handle broke) I could easily put it onto a wood one. While I don't know about throwing it (personally, I am not into throwing them) it IS a very capable chopper. It holds its edge pretty darn good (better than I expected honestly). As well, the tail spike can get the job done too. The only real issue anyone might have is the protective cover. I hesitate to call what goes over the blade and spike any sort of sheath or scabbard; it is a folding plastic cover. Neat design, but lacks any real thought toward attachment points and carrying it on belt and such. It is sturdy enough that, when on the tomahawk, I am confident someone could rig up something with straps or paracord to belt carry or attach it to a pack, but it is something I think Cold Steel should have thought of in the design stage. All in all, I liked it enough that a week after I got it I ordered another to have as backup.

The real deal ๐๐ป
As an ex-officer of the Pioneers Corps (EOD), I value real and efficient products. This tomahawk is well balanced, solid, easy to use and sharp. I recommend it for outdoor chores, gardening activities or possible survival experience. It is part of my Bug Out kit now.

Serious tool.
This is a serious tool and make no mistake as a combat weapon it would be very effective, devastating in fact. It has weight to the head and whether you use the blade or spike side it will leave a very recognizable mark on the target. The handle is the perfect length for a good swing chopping through tree trunks, branches, heavy underbrush clearing a path or removing assaulting limbs from an attacking enemy. The handle if it were to get damaged is replaceable, it comes fairly sharp but you can tone it up to your personal preference level. I have other hawks but I think this one stands out, if you were picking individuals to be on your team for a street hockey game, this guy would be your first choice. I don't throw mine but you can throw this hawk but this thing is more of a close quarter weapon and it reminds me of a medieval battle axe, this thing will breach doors in an emergency situation and give a secure feeling if approached by a bear on the trail. It is not a compact, lightweight item you put in your pack, so if that is what you are looking for choose another model. My only negative about this item is I don't like the blade guard that comes with it, it works but I haven't liked any of the sheaths of any of the hawks that I have, so it's not just this one, they all are poorly designed and inadequate for storing the tool, carrying the tool or removing the tool to put into action. This is a quality item, I like it and it will get the job done, so I give it the five stars the sheath issue I will take care of with my own design and manufacture something that works for me.
