I thought at first it was a sign of week batteries but it did it on fresh batteries too. That made for an odd wake up on night to hear my kids keys making noises. My kid still had them after three years. Great condition still.

Can you separate the keys from the key fob?

I never thought to try. However my granddaughter is 2 and very inquisitive and has not removed them since she got the keys. The keys are advertised as being made of stainless steel and safe for curious mouths.
