Where Eagles Dare [Blu-ray] [1968] [Region Free]

This is possibly the greatest action movie ever. Of all Alistair MacLean's books I feel this is the very best plot, multiple story lines, however with an over riding single story line that is only revealed half way into the story. This movie is terrific. In this Richard Burton is totally superb. Of Alistair MacLean's action stories, I found HMS Ulysses (I don't know of a movie about HMS Ulysses) and Where Eagles Dare (he also wrote the screen play to Where Eagles Dare) to be his best. I personally feel this is a much more totally action packed super plot story than his The Guns of Navarone. In Where Eagles Dare, every turn there is action, and with this superb plot the story rockets along at great speed. Clint Eastwood as an American OSS agent is Richard Burton's only trusted male companion and plays a good role, second to Burton as someone highly trusted but kept out of the loop until it is absolutely necessary to let him in on the whole aim of the movie plot. Richard Burton plays the role of an English MI 6 Agent, who has a couple of very capable pretty ladies, Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt for help. There are cable car action scenes in this movie which are nearly breath taking, and with a terrific music theme. This movie has everything for spy and action movie buffs.

A workmate of mine around 1969 advised me to go and see this movie which I never did. First saw it on TV a number of years later and straight away thought it was one of the best war movies ever made. I eventually bought the Video, then the DVD and now the BluRay and have watched on the different formats many many times, even though I know what is going to happen. The story is excellent as is the photography the scenery and the acting. definitely one of the best.

I remember seeing this in the late sixties and was impressed. Seeing it at home in blu ray it was just as enjoyable all the way through, would recommend highly if you like WW2 movies.

There can't be many people who are buying this film without already having seen it "first time round" - most of us, in other words, are revisiting our youth. Criticising the movie for its late 60s plot-line and special effects are guilty of criticising a cat for not being a dog. On balance, I think it's a great film and - special effects aside - it beats a modern James Bond any day in my book. As for the transfer, I haven't watched the DVD but I had no issues with the BD. It played (on my Sony player), soundtrack was excellent, no evidence of colour "blocking" or excessive grain. One reviewer has commented that the snow scenes look artificial. This might be true (although I can't say that I noticed anything) but bear in mind that the film would, in any case, have been shot in daylight using filters to create the night-time effect (which is why it's always a full moon in these movies). The cost difference is not great, so what's there to lose? Just buy the BD version and be done with it.

Was I lucky or not. I say this because my Blu-ray was fine with no problems at all. But if I'm felt let done was with the so called extras, just trailers for the film and less than 5 mins film about "Where Eagles Dare". I seen where people complain about the music at the start, in the middle and at the end, and the films having an intermission as well. Near the start of the film it did state that they ALL SPOKE GERMAN, so that's why the talked in English. No-body has said anything when they came out of the canal soaking wet, and a few seconds later they was all dry, both hair and clothes??? Clint Eastwood was baffled, because he was an American, and was not told really why he was there, but that's why he was there, because he did not know all the facts. If you look at films too long at times they don't make such sense, but you just sit back and enjoy it for what it is.

Arrived on time and reasonably priced.

Love this movie. Love BluRay. Can I tell the difference between this and the DVD version? Possibly, if I squint. Whatever, I want to own this on a physical medium so I'm never left fruitlessly searching my smart TV when I want some guilty me-time with a great story, great actors and lots of MP40s.

It does not need a review since it speaks on its own. Credible action and superlative action by most of the cast.

I am building an all time favorite library of movies, because streaming services are either no longer streaming them or want to rent them. The blu ray of this all time great movie is okay, but the upscaling is not as good as it could be . Still I give the movie 5 stars. The theme song is worth a listen.

Great movie. Transfer on Blu Ray looks great. Extras include "making of" (watch afterwards) & original trailer. I Go back to enjoy this one regularly! "Broadsword calling Danny Boy, over" Of you haven't seen this and enjoy WWII then this one's for you!

If you watch this movie once you will want to watch it many times. Photography, Scenery and cast second to none. ANXIOUSLY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE IT IN 4K!! WHY IT HASN’T BEEN MADE YET IS BEYOND LOGIC. Finally BUY AND OWN VIDEO MEDIA, DON’T PAY TO STREAM IT EACH TIME YOU WANT TO WATCH ANY MOVIE!! Not yelling but IT’S A NO BRAINER AS A CONSUMER.
