After two gold albums, the Deftones broke it wide open with 2000's platinum White Pony . Now, after global sales of more than 4 million albums and having played to over 3 million fans, the band's self-titled fourth ablbum, as erotic as it is brutal, as relentless as it is gentle, rocktes the Grammy winning Deftones to the top of modern rock. While alt/nu/rap-metal typically bounds between two emotional poles--pissed-off and extremely pissed-off--and a musical range to match, the Deftones continue to push the genre's narrow boundaries outward on their fourth big-label release. Mic man Chino Moreno's patent yowl belies a range of emotion rare in the genus, while guitarist Stephen Carpenter seasons his buzz-saw assault with some industrial-strength riff textures and mixer Frank Delgado's spooky, synthetic textures further underscore Moreno's blossoming lyrical impressionism. If they stray uncomfortably close to jagged-rhythms formula in the album's opening quarter, the almost sunny sensuality of "Good Morning Beautiful" heralds some welcome shafts of light amidst the storm clouds. From there on, the mood drifts from languor ("Deathblow") to brooding ("Battle-axe," "Lucky You"), while "Bloody Cape" edges the band ever closer to traditional pop hooks before drifting into the resigned, psych-torpor of "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event." A compelling and encouraging album--even if it's taken them 15 years to get this far. Enhanced CD features include studio and day-in-the-life-of band video footage, as well as 150 candid photos. --Jerry McCulley Review: Perfect - Perfect! These guys are no longer the band you grew up with
First of all, let me just state how much I have always liked this band, ever since I first heard "7 Words" on the radio many years ago. That said, i've bought all this bands' records and have watched (and listened to) these guys evolve from the rough, pissed off heyday of "Adrenaline", through the rap-metal phase of Around the Fur, up to the heavy change (and most evolved sound) that was "White Pony". If their self-titled is any indication, these guys aren't planning on slowing down any time soon, and are certainly not an "MTV Nu-Metal/Rap Metal throwaway" band by any means. On "Deftones", this CD is definitely one that I had to let grow on me simply because it was quite different than past releases. But I think it's really sad to see people calling this CD "Boring", and "not another 'White Pony'!", because such as the tradition of this band, their sound is ever changing. However, that's not to say that they haven't used elements from past successes to form a cohesive effort. "Lucky You" is reminiscent of "Teenager", using synthesized beats and Chino's ethereal breathed vocals. And just as track 9 on White Pony was a heavy hitter with "Korea", the Deftones have also followed through with another strong point in the song "Bloody Cape", which just happens to be one of my favorite tracks on the CD. There are also standout tracks just by themselves that really call my attention, such as "When Girls Telephone Boys". Both the drums and crunchy bass and guitar combination that form the skeleton for the tortured "chorus" in the song eventually give way to desolate drums before elevating itself back up to the level which it started at. "Minerva", which is the album's single or radio track, follows in the footsteps of the first track on the album when it starts. However this time around, instread of tortured screams and an agressive pace, the band goes for a more epic arena approach. The emotion coming out of this track is simply amazing and you can definitely tell Chino and crew worked hard to make this stand out. Another highly emotional track can be found under the title of "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event". Here, the band employs the use of a piano and tambourine with ethereal underlying instrumentation, to sing a song about life now gone. The only real disappointment on this CD, even though I wouldn't even really call it a disappointment, was "Good Morning Beautiful". It's not a horrible track by any means, but it didn't quite grab my attention like the rest of the album did. It's because of this that I am giving the CD a 4.5 (no option for that ) out of 5 stars. Also, I thought that the album itself ended rather abruptly; after being used to the 12 minute epic that was "Pink Maggit", I felt "Moana" could have been fleshed out a little more. I have tried to stray away from comparisons to past works as much as possible here, because simply put this album is a completely new Deftones experience. Just as all of their previous CD's have been different each time we sat down and played them for the first time, so will this one. Like it or hate it, "Deftones" represents a mature sound exhibited by all the members of the band not only musically, but lyrically as well.

Ho ascoltato talmente tanto…
