We never hope to be near a nuclear event and be exposed to radiation. But you never know what disasters or leaks or threats may lead to exposure. Once exposed, I was reading that you need to take potassium iodide within a few hours to protect yourself. I could just imagine everyone trying to rush and get their hands on some.
