I was skeptical about whether the Boveda humidifier system would actually work given all the choices out there for keeping musical instruments in a properly humidified environment....49% Rh, give or take 5%. I purchased one #70 sized packet and one of the Boveda fabric cases, which I thought was a bit pricey at $9.99. The plastic packet containing the liquid gel material sits in the fabric holder in the guitar case, which needs to be closed tight. After day 1 there was no change on the hygrometer in the case with the Boveda system, as was the result for another guitar/case without the Boveda system. Both were showing around 43% humidity. Days 2 and 3 showed the same results for both cases, hmmmm. On day 4 there was about a 2% difference between the two cases, with the "Boveda" case showing the higher humidity level. After a week the "Boveda" case got up to 48% Rh while the other case hovered around 43-44% Rh...not bad for an unhumidified (?) case. I live in SE Pennsylvania so there is a wide difference in humidity from winter to summer. This test was done in December when outside temps were between 25-40 degrees F and indoor humidity was about 36%. In extremely cold or hot humid environments I believe more humidipacks would be necessary per case to maintain 45-55% Rh. However, it seems to me that the Boveda system does work given a few days to adjust within the instrument case, and with the lid properly closed.
