Something Very Sad Happened is intended to be read to two- and three-year-old children to help them understand death and process the loss of a loved one. When a loved one dies, it can be hard to know how to explain it to a young child, particularly if you are grieving the loss yourself. Written at a developmental level that is appropriate for two- and three-year-olds, the story explains death; lets children know that it is okay to feel sad; and reassures children that they can still love the person who died, and the person who died will always love them. Since the two- to three-year-old child cannot read, this story is intended to be personalized; certain words are color-coded in red to cue to you to substitute with the appropriate names and pronouns for the person who died. Includes an extensive Note to Parents and Caregivers with more information about talking to children about death, guidelines for answering a child’s questions, advice for attending funerals and visiting cemeteries, and ideas for commemorating the loved one. Review: A great resource for younger children (and their relatives!) - A really lovely, simple story on bereavement. I particularly love the support for reading this to your child in the front of the book.....and the really helpful advice at the back of the book to help navigate bereavement for the adults. Review: So helpful - This was a great book. It really helped my husband and I when we had to tell our child about the loss of a family member. This book simplified loss in a way for our preschooler to understand. I really appreciated the explanation.

Excelente para explicar la muerte
¡Hermoso!

Great book for young toddlers
Book is very straightforward and good for keeping it simple but explanatory for a young toddler (simple sentences, repetitive words, blunt, etc). I looked through so many books but many geared to this age are about pets or allegorical in nature which make them more difficult for this age group to connect with a death of a person they know. This book is not like that at all - it states what happened and what type of emotions people may feel. Some reviewers did not like the battery comparison (I didn’t either) so I just changed the wording when I read that page to omit the battery part (it reads something like when you die, your body stops working. It is like when your toy stops working). This is hands down the best book I found for my 3-year old to explain and talk about the death of a loved one. Note: it is still not necessarily something she completely understands but this book was more straightforward and I got less questions after reading it (like about seeing the deceased etc)

Yes, get it for the parent guide alone
This was a great book for my 3 year when my father in law pasted. This helped her fill in the gaps and made the conversation more guided for us. Absolutely would recommend even if you don’t read the “story” to your child. Especially if this is a 1st for experience a loss and having a child.
