Is there something in the box (poison?) that kills the snake or is it just supposed to starve to death once he's stuck in the box?

No poison. The glue is to ensure he's stuck until you remove it. Don't starve the snake please. It's never good to make a living creature suffer a slow death.

how long do the glue pads last?

Since I use mine in the basement/laundry area of my house, the pads only last until a mouse or snake gets stuck on it.

How do you bait the trap?

It comes with a glue / sticky pad that you just place inside. You buy replacement pads as needed.
