Product died in less than two months -- but manufacturer was willing to send replacement
Simply put, the unit I received malfunctioned. Varying between slow and fast ticks and chirps for no good reason. Thought it may have been expected. Less than two months after I received it, it has now stopped making any noises and is broken and too late to return due to Amazon policy. Extremely disappointed. I would not buy this again from this seller. I also canceled my Amazon Prime subscription as a result. UPDATE: Contacted manufacturer after my initial review above and explained what happened and they were willing to send me a replacement unit. So the manufacturer stands by their product and it has worked flawlessly ever since. Detected radiation from airport belt scanners and other known standard sources and chirped and went back to clicking idle after a period of time properly. So, I do recommend this product. Just be sure to test and check it out that it is working properly after you receive it. This is a good product to have handy when you need to detect or be alerted to radiation, especially when unexpected. This product is a tool for added peace of mind to be able to detect an invisible threat like radiation and take appropriate action immediately to reduce exposure/harm.

MRI set it off
Item worksโฆtook an mri and it was clicking at a good rate for about 2-3 days. I do recommend the product for just in case our country gets lit up.

Little expensive and quiet, but a worthy purchase
Like a stated in the title, it is a little pricey, but if you have the money, it's a great buy. If you don't already have food, water, and basic sanitation products set aside then use the $100 for that, but if you're well prepared and have a little extra spending cash I'd suggest this a not only a nifty key chain to show off at the local bar, but possibly a life saving tool. The ticking can get a little annoying, it's supposed to tick once or twice every 30 seconds, but if it gets cold it's starts ticking every 10 or so seconds. I've tested it by placing it in the freezer for 20 minutes, then rapidly warming it in my hand and the beeping commences. Usually this way will get you 2 chirps every few seconds for about 5 or 10 minutes, I suppose it depends on how cold it was and how fast you warm it up. It's not very loud, which I think is something that should be improved on, but for what I do it's plenty loud.

Tick, tick, chirp!
Well, I am glad to own this little keychain unit. At first I did not know whether or not it worked, but once I read the instructions and listened closely to the unit, I could hear the intermittent clicking sound, indicating that the unit was properly working (it is also sensitive to heat). A very low sound that was inaudible except with the unit to your ear. Here is the issue, though. When it is hanging from my keychain on my belt loop, responding to the heat of my body, it starts to click loud enough for me to easily hear it. At first, I did not know know where it was coming from but then I realized it was the heat sensitivity of the unit, responding to my body heat (I am older, so my body is not very warm :-) Itโs somewhat of an annoyance, especially when others are around. But not too challenging a situation, as it stops clicking when I walk around and the unit gets cooled. The most challenging sound is the chirping that occurs when I am sitting in my car, driving along, and I hear it chirp. I then realize that the sun is shining thought the front (or side) window onto my leg, onto the unit on my keychain. I then have to cover it up and aim my air conditioner vent on it to cool it off so it stops chirping (chirping sound different than the clicking, as it sound like a flamingo mating call :-) I was not expecting these โissuesโ when I purchased the unit. I have to say that had I known about it, I still would have purchased it because I like the security of knowing what it would be telling me in the event of a nuclear issue. But I wanted people who might purchase this unit to be more aware than I was when I purchased it (and BTW, they are hard to find outside the Amazon site). I was surprised at how expensive they were, but they are worth the money, despite the cacophony of sounds Iโm treated to when I spend time in the sun :-)

Hopefully will never hear the full volume....
I ordered the NukAlert after I was reassigned with my job to Japan. While I think this is probably too much precaution, it does give me an independent view of radiation levels where I will be living. Overall I think it is a good product, I have not tested it at the Doctors office, but would recommend it for people that are going to areas they think will come into contact with Radiation to give them an early warning. I have purchased it so my family can carry it around and only will really take notice of it if it goes off, which is what I want. I have two children so gives me some sense of an early warning. What I did notice though is the silent ticking increases while I was in Hong Kong (rather than Tokyo), but am not sure if that means more radiation or not. It has not beeped yet (thank goodness).

Best Practical Wartime Fallout Meter
Perfect design and function for civil defence applications -- someone really thought this product through very well. Unlike most commercial radiation meters which detect low dose rates only, this small detector is one of the very few designs for wartime use relevant to nuclear fallout scenarios. The photoscintillation system is the ideal detection method for this purpose, and is even superior to the ionization chamber / survey meter (yellow FEMA survey meters) in that it does not need calibration to be effective. Also, very affordable to give yourself reliable, portable capability to be able to know when nuclear fallout dose rates are dangerous or acceptable. Probably the accuracy and function is similar to a homemade Kearny Fallout Meter ionization chamber, but without the fuss and more portable. Hopefully, this will turn out to be another useless item in my kit! The periodic soft ticking sound is very reassuring -- always vigilant. Dec 2025 Update: My NukAlertTM is still ticking audibly, 9 years after purchase! Not sure how much juice would be left for actual use at this point, but so far it has passed the longevity test. Thinking of a re-buy, but not sure how to get a "fresh" one instead of one sitting in warehouse 5 years....

Item you can carry everyday.
Initially I was a little skeptical paying so much for something so small but in the end I believe it was a wise purchase and worth every dollar. I purchased a small stainless steel screw type caribener at Lowes which is now attached to the keyring and then to my belt loop. No way for it to accidentally fall off. I also took the recommended advice from the manufacturer and asked my dentist to subject it to an x-ray for a test run. This made it go off just as stated it would. Eventually the beeps went back to normal. The reason I purchsed it was to detect radiation from nuclear power plants that might be compromised by terrorist or natural disasters. The average citizen will probably not know a plant has been compromised until it is too late. The Nuke Alert gives me the edge to know if I am downwind sooner so I can execute my escape plan much quicker before the roads turn into huge parking lots of stalled traffic. It will also tell me how much I have been exposed which could prove beneficial for medical assistance if needed later. All in all - a prudent buy!

Deffective Product
I opened the padded shipping envelope and the Nukalert had no padding or protection. I removed the Nukalert from the envelope and the back of the Nukalert promptly fall off and the device began to chirp. I submitted a return and find out that I must pay return shipping. I do not recommend the seller and this device is cheaply constructed. I will not be purchasing another one.
