Will the ammonia remover also remove medication from the aquarium water?

No, only water drop & change of all filter materials to new , clean. Drop tank by one/third - add fresh water with tank safe / I prefer Tetra products for this. Also check PH balance, medications can affect this technically it is better to remove & treat fish that are affected and not the entire tank at times may be a better option.

How often do you have to replace it? It's a little expensive to do every month, so I'm a little leery to try it.

I replace it about every month. You can also buy the mesh bags and then buy API ammo-carb and put in the bag I find that very inexpensive compared to the pre portioned bags
