Last year after monsoons the yard was full of six feet tall ragweed. The stalks were too thick to cut with most weed eating machines. Would this work?

Best option for grass that tall is a brush saw attachment on a weed whacker. This is better for here and there brush as you treck through a forest.

What grade of steel is the blade?

the description says tempered steel. it seems very strong to me!

Does it come sharpened?

Yes. The machete is very sharp. Good for softer brush, cactus, agave. For thicker heavier branches you need the steel Tramontina machete.
